Jakarta, March 18 (IANS) Indonesia has waived visa requirements for 79 more countries, expanding the list to 169 visa-free nations as it continues its efforts to boost foreign visitor numbers.

President Joko Widodo on March 2 signed a decree granting visa-free entry to tourists who wish to travel in the country for 30 days, said a statement published on the Cabinet Secretary website on Friday.

"The presidential decree comes into effect once it is ratified, " the statement said, noting that the Legal and Human Rights Ministry authorised it on March 10.

According to the statement, Australia is included in the list of countries after the country was mooted three times last year but later the reciprocal issues were dropped over, Xinhua news agency reported.

Throughout last year, the Indonesian government expanded the list to 90 from 15 visa-free countries.

The government has set a target to attract 20 million foreign tourists annually by 2019 as an effort to boost growth in Southeast Asia's largest economy.

Last year alone, 9.73 million tourists visited the Indonesia.

Jakarta (Antara News) - Drug abuse, which is spiraling out control, has put Indonesia in a state of emergency, the Indonesian government has repeatedly said.

Some 30 to 50 people die daily from drug abuse, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan revealed in Bandung, West Java March 18.

"Drug abuse in Indonesia is worse than terrorism," the minister said, adding that the number of drug users has reached 5.9 million in the country.

The country has 4.5 million drug addicts who need rehabilitation. Some 1.2 million drug addicts are in such dire straits that even rehabilitation is no longer an option for them.

Nearly 75 percent of those convicted for drug trafficking still manage their businesses from jails, he affirmed.

Despite the governments serious fight against illicit drugs, the number of drug-related cases had increased 13 percent in 2015 compared to the previous year.

"This is recorded as the highest surge in the last five years. The increase in methamphetamine usage reached 350 percent and ecstasy 280 percent, which is very dangerous," Pandjaitan pointed out.

Indonesia is one of the few countries that have the harshest drug laws in the world.

In 2015, the Attorney Generals Office had executed 14 death row inmates.

On January 18, 2015, six death row inmates were executed in Nusakamangan and the Mobile Brigade Headquarters in Boyolali, Central Java.

The six were Tommi Wijaya (the Netherlands), Rani Andriani (Indonesia), Namaona Denis (Malawi), and Marcho Archer Cardoso Moreira (Brazil), in addition to Tran Thi Bich Hanh (Vietnam), and Daniel Enemuo alias Diarrsaouba (Nigeria).

On April 29, eight death row inmates were executed. They were Rodrigo Gularte (Brazil), Sylvester Obiekwe Nwolise (Nigeria), Okwudili Oyatanze (Nigeria), Martin Anderson alias Belo (Ghana), and MGS Zainal Abidin bin MGS Mahmud Badarudin (Indonesia), in addition to Rahem Agbaje Salami Cardova (Cardova), Myuran Sukumaran (Australia), and Andrew Chan (Australia).

Further executions of drug offenders are just a matter of time, and likely this year, Attorney General HM Prasetyo has affirmed.

"Just observe the implementation later. It is just a matter of time," he stated March 18.

He had never spoken of executions being discontinued, Prasetyo clarified.

The authorities have not bowed to pressure from other countries which have wanted the executions discontinued, he affirmed.

"There is nothing like that. Our legal enforcement lies in the hands of our own state, and death penalty is still applied in line with Indonesias positive legal system," he remarked.

No party in Indonesia or outside can dictate to the country on the issue of execution of drug convicts, Minister Luhut Pandjaitan also stated.

However, if the drug convicts on death row have not been executed, it is only matter of time, because it was not found appropriate for the law enforcement to do so, he told the press.

"It is only a matter of time," Pandjaitan said when questioned about the governments war on drugs.

The execution of the drug convicts on death row has not yet been carried out, considering the economic stability aspect of the country, the minister noted.

The National Anti-Narcotics Agency (BNN) expressed its support for the governments decision to execute drug-related death row prisoners.

Indonesia has declared a zero-tolerance stance on drugs, particularly drug traffickers and syndicates, Indonesian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Vienna Rachmat Budiman has said.

The ambassador made the statement while speaking at the 59th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) held in Vienna, Austria, recently.

Drug production, smuggling and drug abuse pose a serious threat to Indonesia as such things affect the countrys economic and social life, Budiman said.

Drug traffickers and syndicates have been targeting Indonesia and their networks have spread across the country targeting the younger generation, he remarked.

Therefore, the government is determined to enforce laws firmly against drug criminals, he said.

The ambassador called on other countries to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Indonesia in its efforts to fight drug-related crimes.

Indonesia is, in fact, applying a new paradigm through a balanced approach between legal enforcement and rehabilitation programs for drug addicts, Budiman noted.

Early last year, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) symbolically officiated at a groundbreaking ceremony of drug rehabilitation centers in seven Indonesian cities as an assurance to reach the target of rehabilitating 200,000 drug addicts in 2016.

"In 2014, 18,000 drug addicts were rehabilitated, while in 2015, we target an increase in the figure to 100,000, and in 2016 it should reach 200,000. We should double the number, as the number of addicts continues to increase," Jokowi remarked.

The rehabilitation centers located in South Sumatra, East Java, Jambi, and West Kalimantan, apart from South Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, and North Maluku, are managed by the Social Affairs Ministry.

Tangerang Mayor Arief R Wismansyah made the bizarre claim during a pregnancy seminar in the city, located to the west of Jakarta

The mayor of a major Indonesian city has come under fire for suggesting instant noodles and children's formula is making babies gay.

Tangerang Mayor Arief R Wismansyah made the bizarre claim during a pregnancy seminar in the city, located to the west of Jakarta, earlier this week.

'To create Indonesian children that are healthy smart and competitive, the most important thing is, from the beginning, to provide them adequate nutrition, especially breastfeeding,' Mr Wismansyah said, according to Indonesian news website Okezone.

Mr Wismansyah went on to canned milk and other similar products were relied upon more heavily nowadays because parents are busier.

'So, it's no wonder that recently there are more LGBT,' he said.

https://www.anony.ws/i/2016/03/22/a2.jpg

It comes after another Indonesian politician was criticised for comparing the LGBTI movement was potentially as dangerous as nuclear war.

Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said moves to see greater equality for all Indonesians put his country at risk.

'[The LGBT movement] is dangerous as we can't see who our foes are, but out of the blue everyone is brainwashed - now the (LGBT) community is demanding more freedom, it really is a threat," he said.

Earlier this year, another Indonesian minister called for LGBTI students to be banned from universities.

More than 24 critically endangered cockatoos were rescued by police after being found stuffed in water bottles for illegal trade.

https://www.anony.ws/i/2016/03/22/a158910.jpg

Smugglers crammed the Yellow-crested cockatoos into empty bottles so they could get through customs at Port of Tanjung Perak in Surabaya, Indonesia.

But Indonesian Police discovered the birds, which can be sold for as much as £650 each, and cut them free so they could receive medical attention.

The Yellow-crested cockatoo was listed as a critically endangered species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources in 2007.

The population is at a critical low due to deforestation and poaching and recent studies suggest there may be less than 7,000 individuals remaining.

More than 10,000 parrots, including Lories and Cockatoos, are caught from the wild in North Halmahera, Indonesia, each year to supply the domestic and the international illegal wildlife trade.

https://www.anony.ws/i/2016/03/22/a5.jpg

Around 40 per cent of birds die during the illegal smuggling process.

So for every 1,000 parrots caught from the wild, 400 birds died in vain, during the poaching, transportation and trade, due to poor conditions and cruel handling.

Most parrots are prohibited from international commercial trade unless they are captive bred or permitted by the exporting country.

Yellow-crested cockatoos also breed very slowly and lay eggs only once a year. They can produce only two eggs at a time.

Illegal trapping continues in many areas including Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park, Buton and Kadatua Islands, but has reportedly been reduced significantly on Sumba.

https://www.anony.ws/i/2016/03/22/a6.jpg

Large-scale logging and conversion of forest to agriculture across its range has exacerbated the decline, and the use of pesticides is a further potential threat.

The white birds can range in size from 12 inch to about 27inch in length and present a beautiful yellow crest.

They are found in wooded and cultivated areas of East Timor and Indonesia's islands of Sulawesi and the Lesser Sundas.

Thousands of taxi drivers caused traffic chaos in the Indonesian capital Tuesday in a rowdy protest against what they say is unfair competition from ride-hailing apps such as Uber.

TV footage showed long lines of taxis and three-wheel minicabs blocking a central expressway, men setting tires alight and jumping on vehicles that refused to join in the protest. An Associated Press reporter witnessed drivers surrounding one taxi, forcing its terrified female passenger on to the road with her luggage.

It is the second major protest by taxi drivers in Jakarta this month. They say competition from ride-hailing apps, which don't face the same costs and rules as regular taxis, has severely reduced their income. Many come to Jakarta from other parts of Indonesia and support their families as taxi drivers.

Driver Jeffrey Sumampouw said his earnings have slumped more than 60 percent since Uber and other apps starting getting popular in Jakarta about a year ago.

"The government must defend us from illegal drivers who have stolen our income," he said. "We almost cry every day because it's difficult to get passengers."

Smartphone-based apps such as Uber have turned the public transport industry on its head worldwide. In the US and Europe, the apps have been acclaimed by urban customers tired of struggling to find cabs, while taxi companies accuse the mavericks of running unlicensed services.

Uber has been making a big push into Asia, intensifying competition in a region where there already was a slew of ride-hailing apps such as Malaysia-based Grab, which operates in several Southeast Asian countries including Indonesia. An Indonesian startup Go-Jek, which hails motorcycle taxis, has also exploded in popularity in the past year.

The demonstrations Tuesday elicited little if any sympathy from commuters in a city that already suffers massive congestion.

"This protest is so terrible. They really are rude and overbearing. I was very hurt," said Dewi Gayatri, who missed her flight for a business trip to Makassar in eastern Indonesia.

"I still like Uber, and hope the government protects Uber, because it's so easy to order and cheaper," she said.

Officials have given mixed signals recently about how ride apps would be regulated. Indonesia's president Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has previously defended the Go-Jek app in particular as making life easier for Jakarta residents and refused calls to ban it.

Haryono, a driver for the Blue Bird taxi company who goes by one name, said he wanted to keep on working but couldn't avoid the protest.

"I was forced to stop and join with them," he said. "I cannot do anything because they look angry. It would be dangerous for me, my passenger and my vehicle if I denied their request."

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government has issued a travel advisory for its citizens planning to visit Belgium following the Brussels attacks.

"We have issued a travel advisory, and it is already on the foreign ministrys website. We make an appeal to Indonesian nationals," Foreign Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi stated here on Thursday.

The travel advisory has been issued as Belgium remains on threat level four, the highest in the Belgian scale.

The Indonesian government has urged all Indonesian citizens in Belgium and Brussels, in particular, to stay vigilant and avoid places that could be targets of terror acts.

The Indonesian nationals in Belgium are also reminded to always follow the directives and advice of the local authorities to ensure their personal safety and security in locations that they would visit.

Indonesians planning to go to Brussels have been advised to temporarily postpone their visit.

If they decide to go ahead with their plan, they are requested to obtain full information on the security situation in their destinations.

The Indonesian Embassy in Brussels has started hotline numbers: +32 478957214 and +32 478405728.

Children as young as 11 are being sold for sex in Indonesia by teenagers barely older than themselves.

http://tryimg.com/7/2016/03/30/RHk5K.jpg

Two years ago, there were no reports of child pimps in the country who work as the boss with no adults behind the scenes. But the National Commission for Child Protection says 21 girls between 14 and 16 have been caught working as 'mamis' so far this year, and there are likely far more.

Many teenagers find themselves drawn into the seedy world by the lure of money or as a result of drug addiction.

17-year-old Chimoy first got into the business when she was 14. A boyfriend's sister asked her to sell herself for sex, but she recruited a friend for the job instead.

Then she established a pimping operation that grew to include a car, a house and some 30 working girls earning her up to £1,800 a month - a small fortune in a poor country.

'The money was too strong to resist,' she says. 'I was really proud to make money on my own.' Chimoy, by her own account and those of other girls and social workers, is a pimp.

Children use text messages and social media to book clients and make transactions without ever needing to stand on a dark corner in a miniskirt and heels.

'The sickening thing is you see 11-year-olds, 12-year-olds, getting into these practices,' says Leonarda Kling, Jakarta-based regional representative for Terre des Hommes Netherlands, a nonprofit working on trafficking issues.

'You think: "The whole future of this child is just going to waste."

Chimoy, who has occasionally worked as a prostitute, and other teens in the sex industry that agreed to be interviewed are identified only by their nicknames. Recently, in the eastern city of Surabaya, a 15-year-old was caught after escorting three other teens to meet clients at a hotel.

Police spokeswoman Maj. Suparti says the girl employed ten prostitutes including classmates, Facebook friends and even her older sister - and collected up to a quarter of the £30 to £90 paid for each call.

She used BlackBerry Messenger service to speak to clients, earning up to £250 a month, says Suparti.
The girl also met potential clients in malls or restaurants first to size them up.

'She was running her pimp action like a professional,' Suparti added.

Indonesian police said they had arrested three men Thursday after two Melanesian tribes clashed with machetes and arrows over a mobile phone ringtone.

http://tryimg.com/7/2016/03/30/RHW7U.jpg

Hundreds of Wamena tribesmen descended on members of the Yoka tribe on Wednesday morning in the Papua provincial capital Jayapura, after learning that Yokas were sharing a ringtone which insulted Wamenas.

The ensuing clash reportedly left 23 houses burned to the ground, another 56 damaged and 12 vehicles set ablaze. Police said no one was injured.

"We deployed dozens of police to ensure security in the city. The situation has improved after we arrested three men for allegedly composing the ringtone," Jayapura police chief Iman Setiawan told AFP.

The ringtone had a reggae beat and offensive lyrics about the neighbouring Wamena tribe, he said.

"The lyrics were considered humiliating and insulting to the Wamenas, so that triggered a spontaneous reaction," he added.

Papuan tribal groups engage in elaborate war rituals to resolve disputes, often involving arrows, spears and homemade guns.

Is singapore's Chinatown or raffles the arcade rate as good in batam Nagoya area ?

It really depends.

If you are heading to Batam on a super ultra peak season,eg CNY long weekends or any long weekends with an attached public holiday, then likely changing at around Chinatown or Raffles place will be a bit better. Tested it out during CNY 2016.

Under normal circumstances aka normal days, changing in Batam still gives better rate. If you need some Indonesia Rupiah,my advise is to change a little bit in Singapore 1st,then go Batam to change the rest. And in Batam, changing money via most Ferry terminals area (Harbor bay/Batam Center Ferry terminal etc) or major Batam shopping malls (eg,Nagoya Hill Mall/BCS Mall etc) usually dont gives very good rate if you are making a Batam to Batam comparison. Visit those smaller individual shops, check their given rates with at least 3 different money changing shops there before committing yourself to the exchange.

Hope that helps.

The head of the Northern Territory's AIDS and Hepatitis Council (NTAHC) has said she was left scared and surprised after being detained at Bali's main airport because she was bringing hundreds of condoms into Indonesia.

NTAHC executive director Kim Gates said the incident early last month occurred when she was trying to take 720 condoms to an HIV organisation in Bali.

At Denpasar Airport officials detained her and confiscated the condoms.

"I have actually travelled with condoms before so I was actually quite surprised," Ms Gates said.

"I was a little bit sort of scared. I didn't know what was going on."

She said officials asked her if she had a permit for the condoms and said she had not declared them on her arrivals card.

"Then they advised me that it is actually in the category of pornographic material, which I didn't think was the case," Ms Gates said.

Ms Gates said it was important NTAHC's partner agencies in Bali received condoms because countries like Indonesia had high rates of HIV.

"We know that a lot of Australians go there on holiday and here in the Northern Territory we see a lot of new cases of HIV coming in from overseas," she said.

Issue not limited to sex workers, organisation says

Ms Gates said figures suggested about one in four sex workers in Indonesia had HIV.

"But there are high rates of HIV across all populations — not just gay men and sex workers but heterosexual groups as well," she said.

She said it was important to Australia that condoms were freely available in Bali due to the number of Australian men who go there and visit sex workers.

Ms Gates added that many of the new cases of HIV recorded in the Top End had been in the heterosexual community.

"We really want people to be smart when they go overseas and go on holidays," she said.

"Take your own condoms with you. Maybe don't take 720 [of them] but enough for personal use."

Although Ms Gates was eventually released, the condoms remained confiscated.

Consul for Information, Social and Cultural Affairs at the Indonesian Consulate in Darwin, Ardian Nugroho, said having the condoms confiscated was probably because officials thought Ms Gates was trying to sell them.

Mr Nugroho said the consulate was happy to provide letters in these circumstances for people to show to immigration authorities to avoid problems when they arrive in the country.

JAKARTA, Indonesia - Two planes collided at the Jakarta airport when the wing of a Batik Air aircraft clipped the tail of a TransNusa aircraft being towed across the runway.

Media reports showed still of the wing bursting into flames, even though no injuries were reported and passengers were evacuated safely.

The Batik Air aircraft was said to be taking off en route for Ujung Padang, while the TransNusa ATR, was on apron movement being towed by an airside tractor.

The incident occurred at the largely-domestic Halim Perdanakusuma airport in Jakarta leading to a temporary closure of the airport.

The Batik Air Boeing 737-800 aircraft was reportedly carrying 49 passengers and seven crew and the pilot is said to have aborted the takeoff after the collision.

Andy Saladin, a spokesman for Lion Air Group said in a statement that the pilot aborted the takeoff of the Boeing 737-800 aircraft to ensure the safety of those on board. “All the passengers and crew are safe, and will be flown using a replacement aircraft.”

Batik Air is part of Lion Group, which runs Indonesia’s biggest low-cost carrier Lion Air.

Edward Sirait, the president director of the Lion Air Group, said the company would await the results of an official investigation.

Meanwhile, JA Barata, spokesperson for Indonesian Ministry of Transportation said in a statement, “The left wing of the Batik flight was damaged in the clash and the tail of the ATR craft operated by TransNusa — another domestic airline mainly serving the east of the archipelago — was also mangled.”

- Two passenger aircraft collided on the runway of an airport in the Indonesian capital, forcing its temporary closure. No injuries were reported.

The accident on Monday evening occurred at a military airport that also handles civilian flights to ease congestion at Jakarta's main commercial airport.

Batik Air said in a statement that its plane carrying 49 passengers and seven crew was "touched" while taxiing for takeoff by a TransNusa aircraft that was being towed.

Images posted online showed severe damage to the wing of the Batik Air jet, a Boeing 737-800.

The airline said passengers and crew were safely evacuated.

This distressing video shows the moment Irma Bule, 29, was attacked mid-performance in the village of Karawang, West Java, by the venomous snake.

https://upload.vstanced.com/images/2016/04/07/a1.jpg

The Indonesian singer was well-known for using reptiles in her acts and thought the king cobra, called Rianti, had been de-fanged.

But when the snake bit her thigh, it injected venom into her bloodstream until a snake handler pulled it away.

The popstar carried on singing for 45 minutes, but began vomiting and having seizures.

She was later confirmed dead in hospital.

https://upload.vstanced.com/images/2016/04/07/a2.jpghttps://upload.vstanced.com/images/2016/04/07/a3.jpg

Ferlando Octavion Auzura, who was in the audience, told a local website: 'In the middle of the second song, Irma stepped on the snake’s tail.

'The snake then bit Irma in her thigh.'

The singer - who had also used boa constrictors and pythons in previous acts - refused the offer of an antidote, according to reports.

Police say they are investigating the incident and have asked people in the audience for information.

King cobras can grow up to 18 feet and are found in southern India, Southeast Asia and India.

They are one of the deadliest snakes on the planet, with the amount of toxins released in a single bite enough to kill an elephant, or 20 people.

But the beasts are shy so usually avoid humans.

JAKARTA China's growing maritime assertiveness has been met largely with silence from Indonesia. But Jakarta has changed its tune recently, reinforcing the nation's military presence in areas where its territorial integrity may be threatened.

This year, the country will double the number of troops stationed in the gas-rich Natuna Islands, at the southern end of the South China Sea. There are also plans to expand an airport and a naval port for military use within the archipelago, which forms part of the country's northern frontier.

The moves hint at a major shift in Indonesia's diplomatic stance toward territorial disputes in the South China Sea. Until now, Indonesia has staunchly avoided getting involved in China's spats with such neighbors as the Philippines and Vietnam. Reconsidering this approach could have significant implications for the regional security landscape.

BOOTS ON THE GROUND

Military officers in camouflage fatigues step out of almost every airplane that lands at Natuna Ranai Airport in the islands' capital. The airport, used for both military and civilian purposes, has become the front line of Indonesia's response to China's aggression in the South China Sea.

A total of 450 billion rupiah ($34 million) has been earmarked for expanding air and naval facilities in the Natuna Islands in order to station fighter jets and military vessels in the island chain, while the number of troops stationed there is set to rise to 2,000 by the end of this year.

A senior government official in charge of security told The Nikkei that the government is looking for a 200-hectare tract of land in the islands to build facilities for special forces.

Recent events in the South China Sea have put Indonesian policymakers on high alert. In mid-March, an Indonesian fisheries law-enforcement vessel seized a Chinese boat that Jakarta claims was fishing illegally in Indonesian waters. However, the Indonesian authorities were stopped from towing the vessel to a base on the Natuna Islands due to interference from a Chinese coast guard ship.

The confrontation drew fierce protests from Jakarta, but Beijing brushed the complaints aside, claiming the incident took place in "traditional Chinese fishing grounds" and that the coast guard vessel was operating outside Indonesian territorial waters.

This is not the first such incident. In 2013, a Chinese ship made a similar, successful attempt to thwart Indonesian maritime authorities.

Growing tensions in the South China Sea have led President Joko Widodo, who came to power in October 2014, to increase defense spending to some 100 trillion rupiah from 83 trillion in 2014. However, the figure accounts for just 1% of the nation's gross domestic product, compared with Vietnam's 2%. In February, Widodo announced a security policy target that would raise the rate to 1.5%, or 250 trillion rupiah.

Former President Suharto, who held office for over three decades after seizing power in 1967, adopted an anti-communist stance, firmly entrenching Indonesia within the Western sphere of influence. Relations with China later thawed during the transition to democracy upon the collapse of the Suharto regime.

Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs, who has rarely hidden his anxiety over China's military ambitions, said in late March that Indonesia should seek to build friendly ties with China while ensuring that its sovereignty is not violated.

China's foreign ministry has also tried to defuse the tension by acknowledging Indonesia's sovereignty over the Natuna Islands, emphasizing that it has no territorial disputes with Jakarta of the kind it has with the Philippines and Vietnam over the Spratly Islands and the Paracel Islands.

China's argument rests on the fact that it does not lay claim to the Natuna Islands themselves. Rather, it claims waters that lie within what it calls the "nine-dash line," an area that overlaps with Indonesia's 200-mile exclusive economic zone around the island group.

Beijing is seeking to prevent Southeast Asian nations from joining U.S. efforts to contain its naval expansion in the region. Meanwhile, it continues to adopt an increasingly assertive posture in the sea.

Concessions regarding China's maritime claims are unlikely. With a key Communist Party congress 18 months away, the administration of President Xi Jinping can ill afford to soften its stance on any sovereignty issues.

A reshuffle of the party elite is expected at the congress, meaning it would be unrealistic to expect anything other than business as usual with regard to China's activity in the South China Sea for the foreseeable future.

At rush hour every weekday, women with babies slung across their arms line the traffic-choked streets of the Indonesian capital, flagging down drivers looking to game Jakarta's carpooling laws by hiring a few extra passengers.

But revelations some of the infants used in this years-old streetside business have been rented out by criminal syndicates, and even drugged to keep them quiet, has outraged Jakartans and prompted a crackdown by city authorities.

Motorists know at rush hour they need at least two passengers to enter main roads by law, so rely on "jockeys": These are often poor young women with a child, who act as passengers-for-hire in exchange for a small fee.

Children tug on heartstrings and help attract drivers, said Risma, a jockey hailing cars near a major roadway in South Jakarta with her three-year-old son.

"People sympathise easily with you if you've got a baby," she told AFP, stressing she only took her child because she had no other choice.

The strategy has existed openly for years, but as outrage mounted over this unfolding child exploitation scandal, the government has now suspended the carpooling rule, putting jockeys out of work.

Last month, police confirmed many of the child jockeys lining Jakarta's streets had been rented out by their families to criminal syndicates.

After a months-long investigation, police in South Jakarta swooped on four adults they believed were renting out children as beggars or child jockeys for 200,000 rupiah (USD$15) per day. Two children -- aged seven and five years old -- and a baby, aged just six months, were taken into protective care.

- Children drugged -

The baby was "unresponsive" when they found him -- drugged with Clonazepam, a strong sedative used to treat anxiety conditions in adults, Audie Latuheru, the head of criminal investigation at the police department, told AFP.

Latuheru said the infant had been given the tranquillizer, acquired from a pharmacy without prescription, to make it calm and compliant during the long hours waiting on the roadside and ferrying about in strangers' cars.

"Nobody wants to have a crying baby in the car," he said.

http://www.picturevip.com/x/clean/images/2016/04/11/LKdr0.jpg

Deputy head of South Jakarta police Surawan, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, said information from one of those arrested, steered police to three women accused of running an "entire syndicate" selling children for exploitation, who are also now in custody.

The allegations of drugging and exploitation rackets -- conducted right under the noses of unsuspecting motorists -- has surprised and outraged Jakartans, though police admit they've known about it for some time but struggled to prosecute cases.

"We have always known that many of those street kids, beggars and child jockeys might have been rented or sold, but it's hard for us to prove," explained Surawan.

"What can we do? Conduct a DNA test every time we see a beggar or a jockey with a baby?," he added.

Asking for identification is of little help in Indonesia, where many people and children are not officially registered in any government system.

There is a push for those involved in such exploitation to be charged with human trafficking, but for those at the coalface, the priority has to the victim's wellbeing.

"Our focus here is to give these children their rights to education, recreation and to be loved, not to solve cases," Sulistya Ariadhi, a social worker at a government child protection agency, told AFP.

But police and social services doubt suspending the so-called '3-in-1' carpooling rule will do anything for the 4.1 million street children in Indonesia.

According to government figures, around 35,000 young people face exploitation -- from prostitution to begging scams.

As motorists fret that the city's traffic will only worsen with jockeys out of business, police and social services say doing away with carpooling laws will do little for vulnerable children.

Surawan said: "They may not be jockeys anymore, but the perpetrators will find a way around."

April 12 (Reuters) - Indonesia, currently serving a FIFA ban, are one of the four countries vying to host the 2023 Asian Cup, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said on Tuesday.

The AFC Competitions Committee said they had received expression of interests from China, Thailand, South Korea as well as Indonesia, banned almost a year ago for political interference in the local football association.

The quartet who met the March 31 deadline will now have to provide government guarantees, legal opinion on their bids and enter into a bidding agreement, the AFC said after a meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

Thailand and Indonesia jointly staged the 2007 edition with Malaysia and Vietnam, while China last hosted it in 2004 and South Korea in 1960.

United Arab Emirates will stage the 2019 Asian Cup after they edged out a bid from Iran to host the tournament, which will feature 24 teams for the first time after expanding from 16 in Australia last year.

The Competitions Committee, chaired by Qatar's Saoud Al Mohannadi, also voted in favour of moving West Asian matches in the AFC Champions League and second tier AFC Cup to Monday and Tuesday in a bid to boost attendances and television interest.

The proposal had come from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, who also argued that playing Champions League matches on Tuesday and Wednesday was hindering their domestic league ambitions.

The change will come into affect next year but the East Asian clubs will continue to play on Wednesday and Thursday.

The AFC also agreed to bring back a tournament for their worst ranked sides this year after they scrapped the Challenge Cup in 2014.

Nepal, Brunei, Macau, Mongolia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and two other sides to be determined, will take part in the 14-day tournament at a neutral venues which will provide at least three matches each and also coaching, refereeing and technical courses.

Kendari, SE Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - Crystal methamphetamine smuggled into and distributed in Indonesia was produced in Malaysia, and the raw materials came from China, according to an official of the National Narcotic Agency (BNN).

"Based on investigations, the raw materials of methamphetamine were from China, produced in Malaysia and marketed in Indonesia," Deputy BNN in charge of the Public Empowerment Ins. Gen. Bahtiar Tambunan said here, Saturday.

Indonesia has been chosen as their market because the countrys population is huge and its territory is vast, he said.

He urged the Indonesian public to realize the dangers of illicit drugs in order to prevent destruction and protect the younger generation.

"Drugs produced in Malaysia have entered the Indonesian territory through land and sea routes, and only a few via airports," he said.

Indonesia has established a synergy with some neighboring countries to eradicate drugs, he said.

However, the Indonesian people must protect themselves and reject drugs in order to stop traffickers from marketing them in this country.

Indonesian prosecutors on Tuesday sought a seven-month prison sentence for a US retiree accused of blasphemy after he allegedly pulled the plug on a mosque loudspeaker during a prayer reading.

The August 22 incident in the middle of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan resulted in retired Californian engineer Gregory Luke, 64, needing a police escort from his home on Lombok island as a mob tore it to pieces around him.

https://upload.vstanced.com/images/2016/04/21/a1.jpg

Prosecutors said Luke had blasphemed against Islam, the dominant religion in Indonesia, when he allegedly barged into the mosque to complain that a nightly Ramadan prayer reading was too loud.

"We recommend a sentence of seven months' jail as he is guilty of blasphemy and committing an act of hatred," prosecutor Baiq Nurjanah told a court in Praya, Lombok.

She said the maximum sentence of five years in jail was not being sought because the defendant, who runs a guesthouse for tourists on the island, had "expressed regret of his act".

Wearing a sarong, polo shirt and black Muslim hat, Mr Luke asked the judges for the lightest sentence possible and apologised for his "wrongdoing".

"I apologise for my wrongdoing in the mosque. I've followed all the trial proceedings and listened to the witnesses' testimonies. I hope I can get the lightest sentence," he said.

Mr Luke has previously denied pulling the plug on the loudspeakers used to broadcast the call to prayer – a feature on most mosques in Indonesia.

In comments to the local media, he has said he went to the mosque to ask for the volume to be turned down when he was set upon by a group of local youths, who pushed him to the ground and pelted him with rocks.

A mob then chased him to his home and ransacked it as police looked on, apparently unable to intervene.

No one has been charged with any offence related to the mob attack on his house.

Taking the cue from the 1970s hit TV show Charlie's Angels, Indonesia has hired three "fashionable cops" in an attempt to improve public distrust in an institution seen as corrupt.

https://upload.vstanced.com/images/2016/04/21/1031-DCOPS-INDONESIA-COPS.jpg

Indonesia's police force hired three female cops that "seem more at home on a fashion catwalk than in a congested street" to deliver a daily traffic report for the morning and evening news, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

Eny Regama, Avvy Olivia Atam and Eka Yulianti help monitor traffic in Jakarta's near 10 million residents every morning.

https://upload.vstanced.com/images/2016/04/21/a280361.jpg

"This is one way of building a good relationship between police and people," Atam told CS Monitor.

They all received prior police training. Yulianti worked in the Narcotics Division when she joined the police force in 2006.

Nearly a third of the traffic monitoring division that was set up in 2010 by the Government are made up of women.

The Indonesian National Police isn't the only group suffering a tarnished reputation from corruption.

Corruption is a major cause of poverty and violence in certain regions of the country, The Jakarta Globe reports.

Politicians in Papua, the largest and easternmost province of Indonesia, were reported to have stolen trillions of rupiahs - equivalent to hundreds of thousands of US dollars - that were meant to go into local infrastructure.

Jakarta (ANTARA News)- The Indonesian government has affirmed that having the death penalty on its statute is part of the sovereignty of a state, according to a press statement issued by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and received by ANTARA here on Friday.

A joint statement regarding the death penalty was issued by the Ambassador of Indonesia to Austria, Slovenia, and the UN agencies in Vienna, Rachmat Budiman, after the ratification of the final document of the Special Session of the UN General Assembly on the Narcotics and Drug issues, in New York, USA.

The ambassador asserted that the death penalty and the mode of its execution is part of the implementation of criminal justice system decided by competent authorities of each country.

"There is no international law prohibiting the death penalty and its implementation. Every country has a sovereign right to determine its own political, legal, economic and social systems, corresponding to its interests and conditions," he said.

Besides Indonesia, several like minded states have the same stance on death penalty as part of the legal system of sovereign states, including China, Singapore, Yemen, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Iran and Sudan.

The joint statement is very important to show that there are differences among countries on death penalty issue.

Drug abuse is a serious problem in many countries. "In view of that, the death penalty is an important component in the criminal justice system that can be applied in case of a very serious drug related crime. The execution has to be in compliance with the principles of law and justice," Rachmat said.

The United Nations General Assembly Special Session on the World Drug Problem is one of the main UN forums on narcotics and drugs issues, which was attended by 193 of the UN member states. The last special session on narcotics and drugs was held in 1998.

According to the Indonesian Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani, the Special Session is very important for Indonesia.

The forum can be used by the Indonesian government to deliver information about and explain to the international community the national policies and achievements in combating drug abuse.

"The Indonesian government is very serious in addressing drug abuse. We are protecting our people from narcotics," Ambassador Djani said.

Children in Indonesia have been filmed risking their lives by crossing a collapsed suspension bridge to get to school. Three bridges in the district of Lebak have given way recently due to flooding.

http://deffe.com/images/2016/04/28/indonesiachildren-_txmx.jpg

When the 162m-long bridge that connected Ciwaru village to Sibagi village broke, school children were left with few alternatives for getting to lessons on time. Muhammad Ikhwan, a 10-year-old student, said he felt forced to choose crossing the collapsed bridge rather than walking 5km. "It's far if we don't use the bridge. Yes, it's about 5km to walk," he said.

The bridge was built in 2004 and is the only access that connects the two villages over the Ciberang river. Residents have called for more action from the local government to repair the crossing. Five days on since floods damaged the suspension bridge, there has been little improvement.

"We hope the government takes immediate action on this matter as this bridge is used for daily activities, especially school children as Ciwaru villages is far and this bridge is the nearest connection," Epi Suhaepi, a head of neighbouring village of Pasir Tanjung said. He said that some parents were worried about the conditions and safety of their children.

Singaporean citizen Mohammad Noh Bin Abdul Salam was forced to cancel his 33th birthday party in Bali on Friday after Ngurah Rai Airport customs officers arrested him for bringing drugs onto the island.

The cafe employee in Singapore was found to bring 10 ecstasy ( MDMA ) pills and some LSD in the form of "happy paper", which has been more widely known as "blotter acid" since the 1960s.

The Bali Customs and Excise Office’s prosecution and investigation chief, Husni Syaiful, said Mohammad Noh was arrested upon his arrival at the airport via Malaysia on AirAsia flight AK 376 on Tuesday afternoon. He said it was the office's K-9 team that found something suspicious in Mohammad's luggage. "When we examined it, we found 10 MDMA pills and one piece of happy paper," Husni said in a press conference on Wednesday.

Officers said Mohammad told the police he bought the drugs in Malaysia. "He said he was preparing the drugs for his birthday party in Bali," Ngurah Rai Customs and Excise Office head Budi Harjanto said.

Budi claimed it was probable Mohammad Noh was not only a drug user, but also part of a drug ring that aimed to test the security in Bali airport.

"He claimed he himself would use the drugs, but we still have to investigate his claims. He could be part of a drug ring," he said.

Mohammad Noh will be charged with violating Article 113 of the 2009 Narcotics Law, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years imprisonment and a Rp 10 billion ( US$757,289 ) fine. He was handed over to the police on Wednesday for further legal processing.

The Indonesia government will launch a trial of an integrated emergency services number, 112, which will connect to hospitals, fire stations and police stations in 100 cities across the country, in the fourth quarter of this year.

“The number 112 will be able to be dialed free of charge from a mobile phone. As long as you have a signal, you can dial the number and the operator will direct you [from there],” Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara said during a ceremony at the Regional Autonomy Institute in Jakarta on Tuesday.

“It is going to be the same as the 911 service in the US. We chose 112 because it is an international emergency number that has long been the standard for the mobile technology industry.”

Currently, Indonesia has different emergency numbers, including 110 for police, 113 for fire and 118 for ambulance services.

Meanwhile, Rudiantara said that on Thursday he would meet with 100 mayors and Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo to talk about the project.

An 18-year-old Indonesian man says he was seduced by a cow, and that's why he was having sex with it.

A neighbour caught Gusti Ngurah Alit allegedly wooing the farm animal on Sunday, the village chief on the resort island of Bali said, the Times newspaper in Johannesburg, South Africa reported Friday.

"He was caught by one of the residents standing naked while holding the back of the cow," village chief Embang Ida Bagus Legawa said in the newspaper.

Alit said he didn't see an animal, he saw a beautiful young woman.

"She called my name and seduced me, so I had sex with her," the man told the newspaper.

Alit underwent a cleansing ritual. The village chief gave the owner of the cow the equivalent of $562.

The cow was reportedly drowned in the sea to rid the village of bad luck.

JAKARTA (AFP) - Indonesian villagers thought they had been blessed when a beautiful doll turned up on a beach, believing it to be an angel fallen from heaven, only to discover it was an inflatable sex toy.

Rapidly-spreading news of a heavenly offering and fears of possible social unrest that it might spark prompted a police probe.

But detectives who arrived in the remote spot soon punctured the theory that there had been a divine intervention.

"When our officers arrived they saw that the 'fallen angel' was just a doll, it was a sex toy," local police chief Heru Pramukarno told AFP.

Villager Pardin, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, found the doll last month when he was fishing off the remote Banggai islands in central Indonesia, police said.

The discovery came a day after a solar eclipse swept across the area, a deeply spiritual experience in the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, leading superstitious locals to believe the two events were linked.

Pardin took the partially inflated doll to his home in Kalupapi village. His mother stuffed the doll with fabric and it was given a fresh change of clothes and headscarf every day, and a chair to sit in.

Police decided to investigate after becoming concerned the increasing excitement about the "angel" could lead to unrest.

"We were hearing many stories, such as that the 'fallen angel' was crying when she was discovered," Pramukarno said.

The problem, it seemed, was the remoteness of the Kalupapi.

"They have no Internet, they don't know what a sex toy is." After investigating, officers confiscated the doll and took it to the local police station, a move they said was to stop false rumours from spreading.

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The chief of Indonesias Anti-Narcotic Agency (BNN), Commissioner General Budi Waseso, claimed here on Wednesday that international drug dealers intend to finish off the Indonesian people by luring them into drug abuse.

He said he believed it was so because "although they are dealers, they do not consume the drugs they sell."

He said he became convinced of this following the arrest of two Chinese citizens by BNN - LY (35) and LC (32) - while they were conducting a drug transaction involving 12,306 grams of crystal methamphetamine.

"They were arrested in front of a hospital on Jalan Pluit Raya, RT21, RW 28, Number 2, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, on Saturday (23/4). The urine tests of the two revealed they did not consume any drugs," he said.

Their two Indonesian accomplices, TS (61) and A (32), meanwhile, tested positive, he added.

"This must be understood by the community that they have an intention of destroying our younger generation. They always claim they have indulged in such a crime only once and it was because they have been deceived," he said.

The four suspects have been arrested on charges of drug abuse and distribution.

Budi Waseso said BNN had been able to confiscate the meth from the suspects, thus saving around 61,535 people who could have possibly consumed the drug," he said.

Jakarta. A French citizen, who had become notorious for violent and unruly behavior in recent years, was shot dead in Badung district, Bali, early on Monday (02/05) after he allegedly killed a police officer who was attempting to arrest him.

Bali Police chief Insp. Gen. Sugeng Priyanto said the incident occurred when officers were about to take the 49-year-old Amokrane "Kiane" Sabet into custody after he repeatedly failed to show up for questioning related to an assault case.

The Algerian-born former mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter allegedly resisted arrest and stabbed one of the officers eight times, fatally wounding him.

"One of our officer was killed after the French national stabbed him with a knife. We shot him to dead after our he ignored our warning shots," Sugeng told reporters, as quoted by Tribunnews.

Sabet died after sustaining several bullet wounds, including at least one to the head.

Police were investigating an assault case against Sabet following complaints from several people in the Berawa, Seminyak and Kuta areas of Badung district that he allegedly refused to pay for meals at restaurants, threatened local residents and drove recklessly.

Since moving to Berawa in 2013, Sabet became involved in controversy when he allegedly tried to "borrow" another man's wife. He reportedly also got involved in a fight with traditional Balinese security guards, or Pecalang.

City Administration Evicting Dadap Red-Light District

Residents of Dadap in Tangerang regency, Banten, have appointed lawyers from the Jakarta Legal Aid Foundation ( LBH Jakarta ) to represent them in possible legal battles against the local administration following their forcible eviction on Tuesday.

Like Kalijodo in North Jakarta, an area earlier demolished by the Jakarta administration, Dadap is also known as a red-light district. Many sex workers from Kalijodo reportedly moved to Dadap after Kalijodo’s closure.

“Yes, we will accompany the residents of Dadap. We will try to find an out-of-court solution such as that suggested by the National Commission on Human Rights,” said LBH Jakarta lawyer Tigor Hutapea as reported by kompas.com on Thursday.

LBH Jakarta may take legal action against the local government if the residents wish to do so. Tigor said he would discuss the matter with the residents.

The residents of Dadap have argued that the eviction will not only affect those operating in the red-light district, but also those living in regular residential areas. Tangerang Regent Ahmed Zaki Iskandar, however, has promised not to evict residents living in Dadap’s standard residential areas.

The residents are disappointed because Ahmed has been reluctant to meet with them to discuss the eviction plan. “We visited the regent’s office in early May. The regent promised to meet with us. But we cannot meet with the regent. We only met the secretary,” said Aldy, chairman of a local youth forum.

Armed with various sharp weapons, Dadap residents clashed with security officers on Tuesday when the local government tried to evict them from the area. The clashes occurred in the morning and took place again in the afternoon.

They threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at security officers, who escorted the workers demolishing the properties in the area. In response, the security officers shot tear gas to disperse the crowd, made up of hundreds of people. ( bbn )

To be safe:
- Only buy from trusted stores/clubs with good repuataions. Never buy from street vendors
- Inspect the bottle carefully. Check the labels for air bubles, signs of re-use, tapered corks or lids
- If you are afraid, stick to beers, instead of spirits, whiskey's wines, as beers are lower profit and don't use methanol

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A Nigerian citizen has been sentenced to 20 years in jail and fined Rp1.2 billion for facilitating narcotic drug distribution.

"Arinze was proven to have conspired to commit an evil act by becoming a facilitator in the distribution of Category I narcotic drug," chief judge of the West Jakarta district court, Bambang Mursito, said while reading out the verdict here on Wednesday.

In view of that, the panel of judges that had considered all the facts disclosed during the sessions, sentenced him to 20 years in jail and imposed a fine of Rp1.2 billion. If he fails to pay the fiine, he will have to serve six months more in jail.

Upon hearing the verdict, the state prosecutor, Nugraha, said he was yet to make up his mind whether to accept it or not. The prosecutor had asked for a death sentence.

Through his lawyer, Arinze Petrus Eneh said he was satisfied with the judges decision but said he, too, has to decide whether to appeal.

"In principle, we are satisfied with the verdict. However, we would think and consider about appealing it," the lawyer, Dolfie Rompas, said.

Arinze alias Zona, along with Tuti Sudartika alias Dede Rosa and Rojali Pajar Saputra (the two were tried under different dossiers), were involved in a case of illegal possession of 6.3 kilograms of methamphetamine.

Arinze, who is currently being held at Salemba Penitentiary in Central Jakarta in a narcotic case still under judicial process, was ordered by a man named John (still at large) to pick up narcotic drug from China and bring it to Indonesia.

He then asked Tuti and Rojali, (earlier informed by David, at large) to carry out the job.

The drug, weighing 6.3 kilograms, was smuggled in a thermos flask through a Covenant Logistic expedition in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, and then kept in a kiosk in Cibinong, Bogor, West Java.

The state prosecutor has charged all the suspects with violation of Law Number 35 of 2009 on narcotics because they attempted to commit an evil act of smuggling a narcotic substance by becoming facilitators in the distribution of drugs and therefore deserved a death penalty.

The Batam Authority ( BPK ) Hospital has urged the family of UK citizen Scott Roddie, 52, to pick up his body, which has been held in the morgue of the hospital for more than three months.

The hospital’s management is worried about the condition of the body if it is kept too long in the morgue.

The Awal Bros Hospital, Batam, sent the body of the British man, who died of natural causes, to the BPK Hospital on Feb.10.

Head of the BPK Hospital’s morgue Rian Narulita told thejakartapost.com that it was the Batam, Rempang and Galang ( Barelang ) Police’s intelligence division and the Awal Bros Hospital that had entrusted Roddie’s body to her hospital.

“We keep calling on the police and Interpol to provide certainty [on when the body will be picked up] because it has been here too long,” said Rian.

She further said that based on standard operating procedures, a dead body could be kept in cold storage for three months at maximum. The storage can last longer, up to six months, if the cold storage facility’s door is kept closed. However, the cold-storage facility in which Roddie’s body is being kept has been opened several times so there is no guarantee that its condition will not deteriorate within the next three months.

“We don’t know what the problem is, neither his family nor the UK Embassy in Jakarta have yet picked up the body. We are really worried about the condition of the body,” said Rian.

She further explained that the cost of storing Roddie’s body amounted to Rp 20 million ( around US$ 1,500 ).

“We want the body to be immediately picked up because BPK Hospital has only eight corpse cold-storage facilities. It is the only hospital in Riau Islands that has a corpse cold-storage facility,” said Rian.

BPK Hospital spokesperson Wawan Setiawan said Roddie died when he was undergoing medical treatment at Awal Bros Hospital. The hospital later sent the body of the expatriate, who worked for a shipyard company in Batam, to the BPK Hospital as his family members had yet to pick it up.

“We treated it differently because he’s a foreigner. According to our existing procedures, we bury a body if no family member picks it up within a month. But this is for Indonesians. The problem is, the UK Embassy has not yet given any helpful information for us to decide [what to do with the body],” said Wawan.

A source who wished to remain anonymous said the police were facing difficulties in tracing the whereabouts of Roddie’s family in the UK. It was reported that the deceased was estranged from his family. Meanwhile, the UK Embassy has provided little assistance to the Indonesian authorities in resolving the problem.

A recent operation by the Batam, Rempang and Galang ( Barelang ) Police have highlighted the extent of an issue afflicting those areas, namely online prostitution.

The Barelang Police arrested 10 women allegedly involved in online prostitution activity, which offered commercial sex services via the Internet. The police also named three people suspects in the case.

The Barelang Police’s head of crime and investigations unit, Comr. Memo Ardian said the online prostitution was discovered following their investigation into the growing problem of sex services offered on the internet, one of which was on the Cewek Panggilan Batam ( Batam Call Girls ) site. A number of suggestive pictures of women, which contained pornographic elements, were displayed on the site.

“The police’s information and technology team then tracked down the whereabouts of the site and it was found that it operated in Batam,” said Memo. The police carried out the arrests on April 25, he added.

Memo said the 10 young women arrested were commercial sex workers operating online while the three other people named suspects allegedly played roles as cashier, procuress and broker in the business.

“We will investigate consumers of their sex services. We have got phone numbers from their books,” said Memo.

The police chief further revealed the online prostitution operators received orders from their customers, who were mostly Singaporean and Malaysian residents and other visitors, by phone. Most of the customers knew what services were offered on the site, he said.

It was further revealed that after reaching an agreement with the procuress on the type of prostitute they wanted and their prices, the customers would arrange a meeting venue to which the prostitutes would be brought.

The online prostitutes were offered at various prices, starting from Rp 500,000 ( US$37.89 ) for short time and Rp 1.5 million for a whole-day booking.

“Most of their customers are residents of our neighboring countries and other outsiders. We are still investigating the case,” said Memo.

He said the suspects would be charged with violating the Criminal Code on prostitution and Law No.11/2008 on electronic information and transactions ( ITE ).

An NGO activist concerned with women and children’s protection, Retno Permatasari, welcomed the police’s actions against online prostitution in Batam.

“We hope the measures can be taken against not only one site but also against all online prostitution businesses currently operating. We’ve seen it [online prostitution] take place in more than one place,” said Retno.

She said the majority of customers using the online prostitution services were men from Singapore and Malaysia, who spent their weekend in Batam.

“The commercial sexual workers are organized by prostitution groups but some of them offer themselves individually via social media,” said Retno.

A new species of wasp discovered on the Indonesian island Sulawesi is two-and-a-half inches long, and has jaws so vast that its discoverer admits, "I don"t know how it can walk."

https://str.your-pictionary.com/AgH.jpg

Lynn Kimsey, professor of entomology at the University of California, Davis, says ‘Its jaws are so large that they wrap up either side of the head when closed. When the jaws are open they are actually longer than the male’s front legs."

Kimsey discovered the warrior wasp on the Mekongga Mountains in southeastern Sulawesi.
She says its enormous size and ferocity makes it like "the Komodo Dragon of wasps".
‘I’m going to name it Garuda, after the national symbol of Indonesia,’ Kimsey said.

Garuda - known as "King of Birds" - is a powerful mythical warrior that’s part human and part eagle, boasts a large wingspan, martial prowess and breakneck speed.

‘The first time I saw the wasp I knew it was something really unusual,’ said Kimsey.
‘I had never seen anything like this species of Dalara. We don’t know anything about the biology of these wasps. They are only known from southwestern Sulawesi.’

"The large jaws probably play a role in defense and reproduction," she said.
‘In another species in the genus the males hang out in the nest entrance.

https://str.your-pictionary.com/AT2.jpg

This serves to protect the nest from parasites and nest robbing, and for this he exacts payment from the female by mating with her every time she returns to the nest. So it"s a way of guaranteeing paternity.
Additionally, the jaws are big enough to wrap around the female;s thorax and hold her during mating.’

MONKEYS in Indonesia are being chained up and forced to perform human tasks for tourists.

https://upload.vstanced.com/images/2016/05/26/a1.jpg

These shocking pictures from the slums of Jakarta show the primates dressed up in bizarre costumes and made to ride bikes and scooters while their owners collect money from spectators.

The long tailed macaques are sold for as little as £14 in the country and undergo agonising training regimes at the Masked Monkey Park.

Some of the cruel trainers even hang the moneys upside down or strap their arms behind their backs to force the monkeys to walk upright.

One of the trainers called Cecep explained that around half the monkeys undergoing the training died.

He said: “I’ve lost count of how many monkeys have died.

“It’s the risk we have to take. Treating them leniently will not make them able to do anything,’

“Sometimes I feel pity for the monkeys, but life is hard in Jakarta.”

https://upload.vstanced.com/images/2016/05/26/a2.jpg

Animal rights activists said the practice was cruel and against the law.
Pramudya Harzani from the Jakarta Animal Aid Network, said: “In the first two weeks of training, the monkeys suffer incredibly.

“They are hung and forced to do things humans do.

“Many monkeys don’t make it and die.”

The government’s intention to impose harsh punishments on perpetrators of child sexual abuse, as stipulated in a new regulation in lieu of law ( Perppu ), has gained wide support from lawmakers from various political parties.

Many of the lawmakers, however, are still considering whether the Perppu will become an independent law or will be deliberated as part of a sexual violence bill at the House of Representatives.

“There are two ways to accommodate the Perppu: inserting it into the sexual violence bill or deliberating it as a separate bill. But it is a technical issue," said Arif Wibowo, a lawmaker from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle ( PDI-P ).

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo signed a Perppu on Wednesday on sexual violence against children.

The punishments include a minimum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, a maximum sentence of the death penalty, and additional penalties such as the publication of sex crime convicts’ identities, chemical castration and the use of electronic tags for pedophiles and child rapists.

The secretary of the Golkar Party’s faction in the House, Azis Syamsuddin, praised the Perppu, saying the only thing left was law enforcement.

He preferred including the Perppu in the bill being debated by lawmakers. "We will include the Perppu in the sexual violence bill because the Perppu is not comprehensive," he said, adding that his party would carry out a thorough study over three months to ascertain whether castration or other punishments would give a deterrent effect.

Chairman of the Gerindra faction Ahmad Muzani said his party supported the maximum sentences stipulated in the Perppu, but said lawmakers needed to look into whether the Perppu had a long-term perspective in fighting the sexual abuse of children.

“We need to create a long-term regulation. The Perppu was published because of the urgency and usually has only a short-term orientation," Muzani said.

Another Gerindra lawmaker, Muhammad Syafi'i, however, opposed the chemical castration, saying such crimes could be also perpetrated with other body parts, not only the genitals. "I don't really support the castration; the perpetrators should get the death sentence instead," Syafi'i said.

Echoing Syafi’i’s comments, Democratic Party deputy chairman Sjarifuddin Hasan said the government must provide a deterrent effect. Therefore, he agreed with the death penalty for adult perpetrators.

Meanwhile, a lawmaker from the National Awakening Party ( PKB ) appreciated the government’s seriousness in providing a legal basis to take harsh action against sexual criminals, but added that the government should also get serious in preventing the spread of pornography.

"We fully support the government's move, but it must be followed by the government's strict actions to close sites that contain porn," PKB faction chairman Jazilul Fawaid said, adding that alcohol consumption and watching pornography could lead to sex crimes.

The Hanura Party considered the Perppu to be a legal basis to "save our next generation". The party believed the Perppu’s issuance was of urgent importance, and it supported the castration punishment, Hanura deputy chairman Nurdin Tampubolon said.

Indonesia has some of the lowest cigarette prices in the world, with a pack costing just US$1.

In a country where 28.6 million people are still living below the poverty line, cigarette addiction makes low-income people even poorer, to the extent where some people sacrifice basic necessities — such as their children’s education — in order to buy cigarettes.

Health Minister Nila F. Moeloek said recently that she had noticed an alarming trend where children dropped out of school because their parents preferred to spend their income on cigarettes, rather than education.

“There are many children who have to drop out of school because of a lack of money. And we have lost count of how many children are malnourished because the household spending goes mostly to cigarettes,” she said.

The poorest families in Indonesia spend almost 12 percent of their incomes on cigarettes, according to a report on Indonesia by the Global Adult Tobacco Survey ( GATS ) in 2011.

Furthermore, cigarettes have become the second biggest household expense in both urban and rural families after rice, according to a 2015 survey from the Central Statistics Agency ( BPS ).

While there has yet to be a study on how many children’s educations are sacrificed because of their parents’ smoking habit, there are many real-life anecdotes.

One instance is the case of a fisherman in Muara Angke, North Jakarta, whose two children dropped out of school because their father’s daily income of Rp 50,000 went to four packs of cigarettes per day, according to National Commission on Tobacco Control commissioner Fuad Baradja.

Nila said that Indonesian children stayed an average of 8.3 years in school, further indicating that high cigarette consumption ate up money that could have been spent on other necessities.

“While there could be many reasons that children drop out of school, one of them might be because the parents are not focusing enough on funding their children’s education. Even though the government has provided financial assistance for education, why is it only eight years?” she said.

There are countless other intangible costs of smoking, which are often easily forgotten.

“If a father is smoking inside his house and his daughter is having respiratory problems because of that, just count the cost incurred from the days when she has to skip school. What about medicine for her? And the father might also have to leave work to take his daughter to the doctor,” said Nila.

The government has tightened surveillance on foreigners living in the country following concerns about drug trafficking cases, according to the Law and Human Rights Ministry.

The Central Java administration is setting up a watchdog group to monitor the movement of foreigners in the region in a bid to reduce the number of those who commit crimes, the ministry’s director general of immigration, Ronny F. Sompie, said on Thursday in Semarang.

“If they harm us, we will deport them. We have selective measures,” Ronny asserted.

The Foreigners Monitoring Team ( Pora ) consists of 33 secretariats under six immigration offices in Central Java, tasked with monitoring the entry and exit of foreign nationals, he said.

Ronny added that the team would form smaller groups to track the movements of foreigners at subdistrict levels, including at bus terminals, train stations, ports and airports.

According to Pora data, 85 of the 2,000 foreigners registered in Semarang were involved in crimes from January to April.

The National Narcotics Agency’s ( BNN ) Central Java head Brig. Gen. Amrin Remico said there was a new trend in drug trafficking in Semarang where drug dealers were marrying local people to cover up their crimes.

“Last January, we succeeded in discovering a drug network from China and seized 97 kilograms of narcotics,” Amrin added.

The South Jakarta Immigration Office previously announced that it had set up a team to monitor the large number of foreigners living in Jakarta.

A strong undersea earthquake magnitude 6.5 on richter scale hit the Indonesian port city of Padang on Thursday, officials and residents said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The quake was centred about 155 km south of Padang, off the coast of Sumatra island at a depth of about 50 km , with a magnitude of 6.5, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The USGS said the quake had a depth of 50.8 kilometers, reports New Zealand Herald.

Indonesia' Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, said the earthquake which struck at 5:56 a.m. (2256 GMT) had no potential to trigger tsunami.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific basin.

In December 2004, a massive earthquake off Sumatra island triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.

Many parents in the industrialized island of Batam have refused to get their children under the age of five vaccinated against polio for unclear reasons, a doctor said.

"They shut their door to health officers who approached their houses. Some of them were asked to go away," Head of Riau Islands Provincial Health Office Tjetjep Yudiana said here on Wednesday.

To overcome the problem, the health office involved police officers to help its health officers vaccinate children under the age of five, he said.

Tjetjep said on March 16 that hundreds of children under the age of five in the Indonesian province of Riau Islands are infected with HIV and that they cannot receive oral polio vaccine.

"Most of them live in Batam city," he said.

Data from the Batam Health Office shows that as of 2015, the city had 4,184 people living with HIV and 1,630 people living with AIDS.

A total of 620 people living with HIV/AIDS in the city have died.

Some 23 million Indonesian children under the age of five received polio vaccines during the National Polio Immunization Week held simultaneously in the country from March 8 to 15.

The immunization week is part of a nationwide campaign to promote residents awareness about the threat of polio. It is also part of the countrys commitment to work with communities worldwide to achieve total eradication of polio by the end of 2020.

The Director of Disease Prevention and Control at the Health Ministry, HM Subuh, said the government has set a target to ensure that 95 percent of the population is covered by the immunization program this year.

Idul Fitri, more commonly referred to in Indonesia as Lebaran, is the celebration that comes at the end of the Muslim month of fasting, Ramadhan. The Arabic meaning of Idul Fitri is “becoming holy again”.

The dates of the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, Ramadan, vary from year to year, as the Muslim calendar (Hijrah) is based on a lunar cycle of 29 or 30 days. The exact date is determined by the sighting of the new moon. These lunar calculations lead to an official announcement by the government on the eve of Ramadan and Idul Fitri so that the faithful know when to begin and end the fasting month. In 2016, Ramadan is expected to start around June 5th and Lebaran will fall on 6-7 July, with most offices and businesses taking "collective leave" From July 4 to July 7th.

Ramadan

To understand the significance of Lebaran, an understanding about the fasting month of Ramadhan is important. During the month of Ramadhan, Muslims must refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, marital relations or getting angry during the daylight hours. In addition, those fasting are supposed to refrain from bad habits - lying, getting angry, using bad language as well as to be more diligent in prayer and give to charities. It is believed that fasting heightens spirituality and develops self-control.

The fast begins in the morning just before sunrise, at Imsak, and is broken at maghrib which falls at sunset. Fasting during the month of Ramadhan is one of the five pillars of Islam and an obligation for devout Muslims.

Those who are expected to fast include: adults (defined as those who have reached the age of puberty) and those who are sane. Those who are not expected to fast include: children, women having their period, travelers, the sick, those with long-term illnesses, pregnant or breastfeeding women and the mentally ill.

The faithful who fast awaken early in the morning to have a meal before subuh. In order to awaken the faithful, the call to prayer is sounded from neighborhood mosques. In addition, groups of young boys or devoted individuals walk around neighborhoods beating on drums and other noise makers to awaken the faithful (and their neighbors) yelling out "sahur, sahur".

The breaking of the fast at sunset is a normally very social occasion for which special foods are prepared for gatherings with family or friends. Upon hearing the sound of the bedug drum on the television or radio as well as the call to prayer from the local neighborhood mosque at sunset, the faithful know it's time to break their fast, or buka puasa. This is usually done with a very sweet drink and sweet snacks. Maghrib prayers are made before a full meal is served. Taraweh congregational prayers are held in neighborhood mosques and at gatherings every evening at about 7:30 p.m. These prayers are not compulsory, but they are attended and enjoyed by many.

The schedule for Imsak and Maghrib is posted in major newspapers and on the television throughout Indonesia, as well as published in handouts by major religious organizations.

While it is expected that people will keep to their normal activities during the fast, needless to say the lack of liquid and food during the day and the unusual sleep and meal schedule soon take their toll. During the fasting month you may see that sleep and food deprivation cause those fasting to have reduced energy levels as well as finding it more difficult to concentrate on tasks.

Why does Islam oblige its followers to fast during Ramadhan each year?

- To develop compassion for the poor and needy who feel hungry every day.
- As a spiritually and physically cleansing experience. Just as in other world -religions, fasting is seen as an opportunity to separate yourself from the things of this world and to concentrate on your relationship with God.
- To become closer to God by contemplating his will in your life.
- To build self-discipline and to become a better person.

How does Ramadhan affect expatriates?

The overall pace of life overall slows down. Things take longer to get accomplished both at home and at the office.
Your live-in household staff will arise very early in the morning to prepare their pre-dawn meal and many try to complete their heavy chores early in the morning just after they've eaten. If their pre-sunrise noise is bothering your family, talk with your staff to see how they can reduce their noise levels while your family is still asleep.
Your household staff may need a nap mid-morning or in the afternoon to keep pace with their altered sleeping and eating schedules.
Muslims that may not normally be diligent in observing the obligatory five prayers a day, may begin to pray regularly during this time, necessitating their absence from work for about 10-15 minutes.
It would be best to schedule difficult tasks before or after Ramadhan to achieve your workers best efforts.
Your cook will not be able to taste the foods she is cooking for you.
Your driver will appreciate it if you can let him break the fast in the car with a drink of water and a sweet snack, if he is driving you home at sunset. If possible, schedule your travel either before or after Maghrib.
Street food vendors and some restaurants close during the day and some restaurants stop serving alcohol totally, and others only in the evening. Other restaurants cover the windows during the day with curtains. The government may order the closing of night entertainment centers during the first day and the last day of Ramadhan. Some establishments that are in 5 star hotels or better known clubs will be allowed to operate; however will have shortened hours throughout the month. You won't have any trouble finding seating at restaurants throughout Jakarta for lunch, but dinner may be more difficult. Buffets catering to those breaking their fast at sunset offer a delicious array of Indonesian specialties.
You may be awoken early in the morning by the enthusiastic young people parading through the neighborhood (DON'T tell them to be quiet! This would be extremely offensive, just quietly endure.)
Food prices rise dramatically as Lebaran nears. Supermarkets will become extremely busy as people are looking for special treats to break the fast each evening, and especially the 2 or 3 days prior to Lebaran as they prepare for the feasts at the end of the fasting month.
Your household staff will most probably want to take one to two weeks off to visit their family in the village and you'll be left to cope without a cook, driver, watchman and helpers. Consequently, restaurants do a brisk trade during this period as families eat out more often than usual.
It is a government regulation that a one-month bonus is paid to all household staff and salaried employees in offices and factories near the end of the fasting month. This is referred to as THR (tay-ha-err) Tunjangan Hari Raya, or bulan ketigabelas - the 13th month.
An increased level of patience and tolerance is required when dealing with workers who are fasting.
Do not speak harshly with those fasting as if they get angry or have negative feelings towards others it invalidates their fasting for that day.
Traffic jams from the afternoon rush hour start earlier as many office workers are allowed to leave earlier than usual to get home in time to break the fast with family and friends.
It's difficult to schedule travel in Indonesia near the end of Ramadhan due to the annual exodus of 7+ million city dwellers to their hometowns.
You may feel uncomfortable eating or drinking before your fasting staff/friends. It would be considerate to refrain from eating or drinking in front of others that are fasting.
Your neighborhood association may organize a charitable drive for the poor in your neighborhood. It is advised that you contribute to this drive as a gesture of good faith and your membership in the local community.
You'll notice a big increase in beggars at traffic lights as the poor flock into the city from the villages at this traditional time of heightened charity giving.
You will notice a growing excitement amongst your Muslim friends, colleagues and staff as Lebaran approaches and they make plans for their special celebration.
Noise from the local mosques will increase in volume and frequency

Lebaran

At the end of the month of Ramadhan and its special religious observance is the Eid holiday, called Idul Fitri or Lebaran in Indonesia. In Indonesia, this is the time when Muslims visit their family and friends to ask for forgiveness for any wrongs they have committed in the previous year. They express this wish in the phrase “Mohon Maaf Lahir Batin” which means "forgive me from the bottom of my heart/soul for my wrongdoings in the past year". A traditional Arabic (Muslim) greeting for the Eid celebrations is also commonly used in Indonesia "Minal Aidin Wal Fa Idzin", which is expressed upon meeting friends and family during the festive days. Traditional foods are consumed, family and friends gather to ask forgiveness and exchange greetings, new clothing is worn, children receive gifts of money and visits are made to recreational parks -- all to celebrate the successful completion of the fasting month. On Java, prior to the start of the fasting month (but not during it), visits are made to the graves of family ancestors (nyekar) to pay respects, clean the grave and leave flowers, causing major traffic jams near all major cemeteries.

Idul Fitri begins with mass prayer gatherings early in the morning at mosques, open fields, parks and on major streets. It is an amazing sight to see rows of hundreds of Muslim women all dressed in their mukena (white, head-to-toe prayer gowns) performing the synchronized prayer ritual. Muslim men tend to wear sarong, traditional shirts and peci hats to Idul Fitri morning prayers. On the walk home from the mass prayers, quick visits are made to friends in the neighborhood to ask for forgiveness.

Following the morning prayers and neighborhood visits, visits are made to close family members around town. Family members go to their parents first and then to the most senior relative's house (oldest person in the family) to “Mohon Maaf ...” with family members. Then depending on your age/status in the family, you visit aunts and uncles homes to do the same. At each house drinks and cookies or snacks are served, and since it is very impolite to refuse the food, by the end of the day you are so full you can hardly move. These customs may entail several days of visiting relatives and often there will be a gathering of family members at the senior-most relative's house.

Employees may also visit the homes of their senior bosses in the company or critical business colleagues and government officials to "Mohon Maaf ... " after their family visits are completed. In Jakarta, these customs entail days and days of visiting relatives and colleagues resulting in a great time of family reunions and upset to normal working/living schedules. Many people also take the opportunity of the Lebaran holiday to visit recreational parks.

While gathering with family, it is customary for the adults to give the young children some money; they may meet even greet you at the door shaking their wallets! It is also customary to distribute money to children in the poor neighborhoods around your home; small bills given to children will bring huge smiles to their faces! Pick up a supply from your bank well in advance of the holiday.

Strongly held traditions to visit family at this time necessitate the exodus of and estimated 6.7 million (2015) people from Jakarta alone, as well as additional millions from other urban centers, to rural villages and hometowns for the Lebaran holiday. The logistics of this exodus causes enormous headaches for the government each year. During this period the streets in Jakarta are nearly empty as the population decreases dramatically. The hardships and inconveniences endured by the travelers in overcrowded buses, trains and cars is unbelievable, yet they feel that this is a small price to pay to spend the holidays with their family and friends. Traditionally these urban dwellers return to the village with gifts or money for their family, purchased with their earnings from the previous year, or their holiday THR bonus.

There are two peaks to this exodus which cause major logistical nightmares: 1) the departure from the urban areas back to the home village/town a few days before Idul Fitri and 2) the return to the town of residence normally 1-2 weeks later.

They often return from the exodus accompanied by relatives and friends looking for work in the cities, furthering the pressures of urbanization. The government attempts to prevent the “socially undesirable” such as beggars, vagrants and others from migrating to the cites, but the task is overwhelming.

During the weeks after Lebaran many groups hold halal bilhalal gatherings where employees from a company, friends, colleagues or members of an organization gather to share a meal and ask each other's forgiveness. Non-Muslims are often invited to participate in these festive gatherings also.

Various Traditions Associated with Ramadhan and Lebaran

Bazaar/Pasar Amal - Organized by various civic, charitable and neighborhood organizations, goods are sold at discounted prices to help the poor celebrate the holidays with new clothing and special foods.

Bedug Lebaran - The traditional bedug drums are beat at maghrib to notify the faithful that it is time to break the fast. Starting on the evening of the last day of Ramadhan and continuing throughout the night and into the following day, the bedug are also beaten in the Takbiran celebrations either in stationary locations, or in parades through the streets. Takbiran is the prayer and celebration heralding the Idul Fitri holiday. Loud and boisterous parades and celebrations are held throughout the entire nation, which includes drum beating accompanied by amplified prayer and lively Islamic music.

Bingkisan Lebaran - Elaborately wrapped parcels are given by business colleagues or associates to Muslims in the week prior to Lebaran. They are usually arranged in a rattan or wood basket and contain food, small household appliances or dishes.

Buka Puasa - Breaking the fast, the meal at sunset.

Busana Muslim - Fashionable Muslim apparel worn for festive occasions such as Lebaran.

Kartu Lebaran - Many people send greeting cards to their Muslim friends (whether they themselves are Muslim or not). For sale in shops throughout the city, Lebaran card designs should not depict people or animals. Geometric designs, mosques, traditional textiles or ketupat are common. Most cards have the date of 1 Syawal 141_ H written on the card. You need to fill in the appropriate year in the space. In 2016, the Hijrah year will be 1437, in 2017 it will be 1438, etc. Calligraphy artists design specialized cards for customers on sidewalks near post offices and major market areas.

Ketupat - Traditionally eaten at Lebaran, therhomboid-shaped ketupat casing is made of young coconut frond leaves that are still light green in color. Intricately woven by nimble fingered experts who can complete the weaving in 10 seconds, they are sold to the public at pasar (traditional markets) in bunches. The ketupat are filled with uncooked rice then steamed and left to cool before serving. The coconut leaf casing gives a unique flavor to the rice, one always associated with Lebaran. The ketupat is cut open, removed from the casing and cut into small chunks, then served with various accompanying vegetable and meat dishes (opor and sambal goreng), often cooked in spicy coconut milk.

Korma - Dates from Iraq, Tunisia, the US and Saudi Arabia make their annual appearance in markets and supermarkets for the breaking of the fast.

Mudik - The term for the exodus of millions of people from the urban centers to the villages in order to celebrate the Idul Fitri holiday with family and friends in the village. This is a strongly held tradition and travelers happily endure a lot of hardships and inconveniences in overcrowded buses, trains, boats as well as the possibility of seasonally inflated transportation prices.

Puasa - Fasting

Sungkem - The Javanese custom of asking for forgiveness at Idul Fitri which demonstrates the respect given by young people to the family elders. The young person kneels and bows their head to the elders' knees and asks for forgiveness.

Santunan Ramadhan - Donations to a charitable organization for distribution to the poor and needy at Lebaran.

Sembayang or Shalat - Ritual prayers that must be made five times each day by Muslims.

Takbiran - The prayer celebration on the evening of the last day of Ramadhan, to herald in the Idul Fitri holiday. Chants are praised to Allah, drums are beat endlessly, dances, songs, religious prayers and sermons are given in public displays of excitement and praise.

Zakat - The obligatory poor tax that is paid by Muslims during the Lebaran period. Zakat should total 2.5% of one's income, depending on the nature of the gift. Zakat is paid to charitable organizations, neighborhood groups or through direct distribution to the poor and needy in the neighborhood. Zakat tax is deductible in Indonesia; the funds can be deducted from your gross income before figuring taxes.

A Muslim intellectual has voiced his concern over the Serang Public Order Agency’s (Satpol PP) recent raid on an elderly woman’s food stall that had served customers at midday during Ramadhan.

Syafii Maarif urged the authorities to change a regulation restricting some people from making a living during the fasting month.

“During the fasting month people should do good […] What was done by Satpol PP was not good and could not be justified,” the former chairman of Islamic organization Muhammadiyah said as quoted by kompas.com on Sunday.

Satpol PP personnel were seen confiscating food from the stall in Serang, Banten, on Friday after customers were sold food during the day, leaving the stall owner in tears. The footage from Kompas TV went viral on social media and led to an impromptu donation drive that collected more than Rp 80 million (US$6,000) in under 12 hours.

Serang Satpol PP head Maman Lutfi told Kompas TV that the food stall was a legitimate target for the raid as it had served food during the day, adding that dozens of other stalls had been also been raided and their food impounded.

Indonesia’s social media networks have once again shown their might, as an impromptu donation campaign raised more than Rp 80 million, or around US$6,000, in less than 12 hours, in support of a mother crying on TV as Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) personnel took away the food she was selling.

The footage shows the elderly woman crying and begging the officers not to impound the food she sells for a living. However, what she received was a bitter demonstration of power, when the Satpol PP personnel did “their duty” and confiscated her products before leaving her weeping.

Her only wrongdoing was to sell food at midday during Ramadhan, an "act of crime” as a result of egocentric rules that persistently plague the country during the Muslim fasting month.

The heartbreaking incident, recorded by Kompas TV in Serang, Banten, on Friday, went viral on social media.

During the interview, Serang Satpol PP head Maman Lutfi told the Kompas TV reporter that the food stall was a legitimate object for the raid for opening during the day and serving food.

"The restaurants and food stalls in Serang are serving food to those who are not fasting," he said while leading the operation on Friday, adding that dozens of stalls had been targeted in the raid and their food impounded.

Several food stalls owners said they did not know there was a rule prohibiting them from selling during the day. Others said they needed the money for living, especially ahead of the Idul Fitri festival.

Stand up

Responding to the incident, a twitter user named Dwika Putra Hendrawan on Saturday morning decided to launch the #StandupSerang movement. He initiated a Rp 10,000 fund-raising campaign to help the woman and other victims, providing his bank account for the donation.

“Instead of being angry, let us fight against the arrogance with real action. Let us help the mother in Serang whose food was impounded. The donation will also go to other food vendors who cannot make a living due to Ramadhan raids,” he said in his twitter account.

After just 8 hours, he reported to have raised more than Rp 20 million in donations, meaning more than 2,000 social media users took part in the impromptu charity. In an update at 12 p.m. he said he had collected more than Rp 80 million and kept going.

He planned to close the donation at 12 pm on Sunday. “I’m ready to take the responsibility of all the money I have raised in this charity. I will make sure that not a penny will be misused,” Dwika said.

If it were not for his boat, you would think this fisherman was sitting on a landfill site.
In fact, he is trawling the river for waste plastic to help him eke out a living.

Once a tropical paradise, the Citarum in Java, Indonesia, is now said to be the dirtiest river in the world.

Clogged with household waste, toxic chemicals dumped by textile factories and dead animals, it has lost 60 per cent of its fish stocks.

But more than 35million people still rely on it for drinking and washing.

Locals say textile factories illegally dump chemicals into the river at night and some nearby village wells contain four times the recommended safe levels of mercury.

At times, the water turns red, green, yellow and black because of the high concentration of dyes.

It has been linked with increased cancer rates, as well as skin diseases, mental illness and slow development among local children.

There are claims some high street brands could be partly to blame for the torrent of pollution.

This year’s Jakarta Fair, an annually held event to attract shopping enthusiasts with great sales, has given visitors a different atmosphere because the event is taking place during the Ramadhan fasting month.

Many visitors said it was less enjoyable for them to visit the Jakarta Fair during Ramadhan because they could not enjoy its culinary delights during their visit. “I go the Jakarta Fair with my family every year and apart from shopping, we usually could enjoy its food during our visit,” Nurwasti, a visitor from Cibubur, East Jakarta, told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

Similarly, Junaidi from Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, said he did not enjoy very much the attractions offered at the event. “I couldn’t enjoy the cuisines available even after breaking fast in the afternoon. I’d rather perform tarawih [Ramadhan evening prayers] instead of browsing the event’s booths. As a Muslim, I want to improve the quality of my religious service during Ramadhan,” Junaidi said.

Meanwhile, Wiyardo “Ade” Mulyono from Depok, West Java, said he could not visit the event in the evening because his wife had to accompany their children carry out religious activities for Ramadhan at the mosque. “Besides, we have to perform tarawih together,” Ade said.

Ade further said the fair seemed to be getting less popular when compared to last year. “Today I’ve seen less visitors in the afternoon compared to last year’s event,” he said.

Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, and Jakarta International Expo managing director Prajna Murdaya jointly opened the 49th Jakarta Fair on Friday, to celebrate the 489th anniversary of the city. The annual event will be held from June 10 to July 17 at the Jakarta International Expo center in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.

It is expected that this year’s Jakarta Fair will draw 5 million visitors and register transactions worth Rp 5.8 trillion (US$436.58 million). A total of 2,700 companies have booths at the fair, as well as close to 150 musicians will perform to entertain shoppers.

Bogor, W Java (ANTARA News) - Bogor police have arrested 31 Chinese including nine women believed to be members of an international syndicate on charge of cyber fraud.

The Chinese were arrested on Monday night in a raid by police and immigration office in the Villa Duta housing complex in the sub-district of East Bogor, in this West Java city, police said.

"They were arrested and police confiscated a number of hand phones, computer sets and other electronic devices," Andi said.

All dressed up: A Toraja woman has dressed the corpse of a relative in a fashionable snapback cap and sunglasses for the village"s annual Ma"nene festival

An Indonesian community has begun celebrations of an annual festival honouring the dead which sees hundreds of centuries-old corpses exhumed, dressed in clothes and put on display.

The preserved bodies of ancestors of the Toraja, an ethnic group from the mountains of South Sulawesi in Indonesia, are lovingly dug up from their graves as part of the ancient Ma"nene festival.

The annual festival, which translates to "the Ceremony of Cleaning Corpses", then sees the dead groomed, washed, dressed in fashionable new clothes and even sunglasses and paraded round the village.

Joining the fun: Centuries-old corpses are exhumed, dressed in clothes and put on display in the Toraja ritual honouring the dead

The scenes might appear gruesome but for the Toraja people, who consider funerals the most important event of their lives, the festival is a celebration.

Photographer Herman Morrison made the trip from Indonesian island Lombok, where he lives, to capture the peculiar ceremony on camera.

Mr Morrison, 33, said: "I live in Lombok, Indonesia, and I travelled to Sulawesi to photograph the Ma"nene festival.

"The ritual is held yearly and is regarded as a manifestation of the Torajanese"s love for their ancestors, leaders and relatives who have died.

"The age of the corpses varies, but some are more than 100 years old. The bodies are taken from their graves by their families then cleaned and washed. Their clothes are replaced and then the bodies are put back in the ground.

"Some of the deceased men are dressed up in suits and ties. It was an amazing sight to witness."

Just thinking about Bali conjures up images of beautiful sandy beaches, crystal clear water and bikini babes lying in the tropical sun.

But did you know that this gorgeous island actually has a dark side? Shadows lurk in every corner, and those turquoise waves are tainted with stories even the Balinese are too scared to tell.

These are tales that may make your hair stand and your blood curdle in your veins.

Do you dare visit these places?

1. Ghost Palace Hotel

Up in the mountains of Bali on the way to the iconic Bedugul Lake, something is stirring in the fog. It’s a ghost story some two decade in the making, and it’s soaked in skin-crawling horrors…

30514

Some say the Ghost Palace Hotel (also known as PI Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel & Resort), a construction perched on a hillside, was built by Tommy Suharto. Others say it was a crooked developer who tried to curse his rivals out of the way.

If you’re brave enough to explore this place, you’ll likely see the wandering spirits of victims, either laborers crushed in their rush to complete the construction, or competitors cursed to horrible deaths.

30515

This hotel may never have been opened to the public, but who knows if it already has a full house every night?

2. The Abandoned Wreck of Padang Padang

Do you believe in divine retribution?

If you don’t, the true story of an abandoned ship may give you second thoughts…

On a tropical Saturday morning in July of 2008, hours before the start of the famous Rip Curl Padang Cup (Indonesia’s longest-running surfing competition) was due to start, a ghostly shape was spotted on the reef near Padang Padang beach.

30516

It was an enormous shipping vessel, the Ho Tsai Fa No. 18, which had run aground on the reef during the night.

30517

But what’s most chilling is that her captain and crew were nowhere to be found.

After investigations probed into the ship’s history, it became clear that something bigger was at play.

The ship had been caught illegally fishing in the past, earning profits through underhand means – there were stories of murder, mutiny and lawbreaking.

30518

The owner was called to take responsibility, but before he could get the ship onto the water and back to its evil ways, assailants unknown came and burnt it to the sea.

The ship might now be gone, but the reef and the beaches of Padang bear the scars of Bali’s karmic retribution, and the ghost of the ship’s sinister past.

They say what goes around, comes around. Care to test the theory?

30519

3. Muaya Beach

A renowned tourist attraction, Muaya Beach is famous for its beautiful white sand, gentle waves and… doll vampires (jenglot) washed up on the shores.

Jenglot are dangerous beasts that resemble a tiny human being – only that they drink blood and can control the actions of their victims, including murder.

30520

Yes, this may not have made it to the national news, but it definitely got tongues wagging in the Muaya Beach community after some joggers discovered two jenglot on the shoreline.

30521

They brought the creatures to the local traditional healer Jero Mangku, who managed to neutralise the power of the jenglot just in time, before the two joggers lost their minds.

30527

What a close call!

4. Balinese Cemeteries (everywhere!)

Bali’s darkest secret is perhaps the one most often concealed from tourists who view Bali as a paradise island.

30528

Corpses lie in Trunyan’s open-air cemetery in Kintamani, Bali, a village where if the decease body was not buried or burned , but put under the tree after an elaborate funeral ceremonies

And this secret is the presence of Leak – an evil witch spirit.

As a child living in Bali, I knew that if you wanted to avoid Leak, you had to stay away from Balinese cemeteries.

But one night, I decided to take a shortcut home through a field full moon celebration, and it was a decision I sorely regretted. Under the dim moonlight, I thought I saw a long-haired apparition digging around in the graves.

What happened after that was a complete blank. I remembered running as though my life depended on it (which was really the case), before I came to the refuge of my home.

30524

Till now, I believe it was the recent blessing I received at the pura (temple) that saved my life.

Or was I simply lucky?

Perhaps. But every time I return to the island, walking near cemeteries still make me shudder. And wait, was it my eyes playing tricks on me, or was there something that just flickered past?

5. Padang Galak Beach

Surfers beware! Padang Galak Beach in Sanur isn’t just a surfer’s heaven, it’s a salty hell.

Beware! There’s more to this beach than meets the eye.

Legends speak of a female sea goddess that haunts the beach, with a wild and angry energy that binds and drowns unsuspecting victims, living up to the beach’s name, which means ‘fierce’ in Indonesian.

30525

Any local will be happy to regale you with stories of those who have ventured into the waters of Padang Galak looking for the perfect wave, only to disappear below the wild water, never to be seen again.

And that wind that blows along the beach? Some say it’s the screams the surfers manage in their last breath, before the sea goddess drags down to the bottom.

Some time ago, a boy was struck dead by a kite at the beach. Rumours spread that he must have incurred the wrath of the sea goddess, who claimed him for her own…

30526

Still not frightened? For those who are adventurous, we have carefully consolidated a list of these haunted places below on the map, beware and venture at your own risk!!

At least four hospitals and two pharmacies are believed to be customers of the fake vaccine production ring that has caught national attention recently, a top police official said on Monday.

The hospitals and the pharmacies that allegedly ordered the counterfeit vaccines from suspect couple Hidayat Taufiqurahman and Rita Agustina are all in Jakarta, special economic crimes director at the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) Brig. Gen. Agung Setya has said.

Agung refused to give the names of the hospitals and pharmacies as the investigation is still ongoing. However, the fake vaccines have allegedly spread beyond Jakarta. Based on the preliminary investigation, Hidayat and Rita's products have also been distributed in West Java, Banten and Medan in North Sumatra.

"They have a distribution team spreading the vaccines," Agung said as quoted by kompas.com.

The producers of the fake vaccines packaged their product in used vaccine bottles and printed the labels at a printing vendor in Kalideres, West Java, he added.

Police started their investigation following reports over suspicious vaccines for toddlers at several local health clinics (Puskesmas). The investigation then lead to raids of home factories in Bintaro of South Tangerang, East Bekasi and Kemang Regency in West Java between June 16 and June 26.

Hidayat and Rita are among 13 suspects named by Bareskrim during their investigation of the case. The suspects will be charged under the 2009 Health Law with a maximum penalty of 15 years and a Rp 1.5 billion (US$ 111,940) fine.

The Jakarta administration destroyed on Tuesday around 20,000 bottles of illegal alcohol confiscated by Public Order Agency officers over the last six months.

The demolition which was conducted at the National Monument (Monas) park by crushing the bottles with steamrollers.

“Actually, 20,000 bottles is too few. Alcoholic beverages can trigger crime and can be used as a basic ingredient to produce bootleg liquor. The impact of booze is severe, drinkers can die in vain,” said Jakarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat, who led the event.

Public Order Agency officers will continue to carry out operations targeting illegal consumption of liquor, particularly by young people, and making sure outlets that sell liquor illegally are punished, the deputy governor added.

Public Order Agency head Jupan Royter said his officers had managed to confiscate 42.3 percent of all liquor being produced and sold illegally.

"Dry sex" involves women reducing moisture in their vaginas in order to make intercourse more pleasurable for men.

This can can lead to cuts, sores and inflammation in the vagina, and increases the chance of a condom breaking.

These factors in turn increase the chance of the women contracting sexually transmitted diseases including HIV.

Dry sex is known to be carried out in South and Central Africa, and Indonesia.

It is borne out of a cultural belief that men find sex more pleasurable if a woman"s vagina is dry, and that men will reject women whose vaginas have been ‘stretched out’ by sex.

To achieve dryness, women insert, chalk, sand, pulverized rock, herbs, paper or sponges before sex, according to journalist Ms Syfret, who has reported on the practice in South Africa.

They also douse their vaginas in detergents, antiseptics, alcohol and bleach.

Women in Java, Indonesia, even "smoke out" their vaginas by standing over burning herbs, LoveMatters reports.

In other areas of Indonesia it is common to insert a cigar-shaped stick made of a plant root.

While World Health Organization consultation papers show global health officials are aware the problem exists, most of the research on it is decades old and there are no broad figures on its prevalence.

A 2009 study looking at how dry sex spreads HIV in Zambian women found knowledge of the practice was widespread.

Around two-thirds of the 812 women polled had used traditional dry sex medicines at some point in their lives, and about half were currently using them.

But a reluctance to discuss sexual health meant the practice was not debated.

The researchers concluded: "Most of the available information has been anecdotal, speculative or inadequate - mainly because of cultural reluctance to discuss or investigate personal sexual issues."

Similarly, a sexual health clinician and campaigner in South Africa told most people are aware of the problem but it is not talked about, and hasn"t received enough attention from the country"s Government for policies to be drafted.

Dr Marlene Wasserman, commonly known in South Africa as Dr Eve, said the continued practice of dry sex shows the lack of education relating to equality and women"s rights in the area.

"It"s definitely a class issue," she told.

"Basically, a woman"s reputation depends on the size of her vagina.

"Among women who are less informed and less educated, there"s an unbelievable ignorance around the idea the vagina adapts to the penis."

She explained that both men and women fail to understand that the vagina is capable of expanding during sex - and then back to its usual size afterwards.

There is also an incorrect cultural belief that if a woman has a partner with a large penis, her vagina will remain permanently "stretched" - and future partners will think she is promiscuous.

The practice is ingrained in culture, passed between generations of women, she added.

She continued: "Men aren"t saying to women, "Put Dettol in your vagina"."

Instead, they insinuate a woman is promiscuous due to the state of her genitalia, she explained.

For women dependent on their boyfriends or husbands, attaining commitment and pleasing them is extremely important.

The idea that pain is normal or acceptable during sex has taken hold, she adds, and most women in South Africa would not think of sexual pleasure as something they necessarily have a right to.

Dr Wasserman said: "I"ve been part of a task force with the World Association of Sexual Health, and we"ve launched the declaration of sexual rights - the right to pleasure - and we"ve been really pushing that.

"Women are surprised that"s one of their rights.

"We know 33 percent of women have and tolerate painful penetration. That becomes part of what they expect from sex."

Dr Wasserman has a radio show which attempts to dispel myths about sexual health.

She also hosts seminars for young adults and parents in order to educate people about healthy sexual practices.

"It"s about educating people and trying to raise awareness," she said.

"The conversation began when we realized HIV was impacting more heterosexual women in South Africa than gay men.

"There was a drive then to say to women: "Don"t put Dettol in your vagina; don"t dry your vagina out. This is dangerous." But the conversation hasn"t gotten going, and women are suffering."

She draws similarities between the practice of dry sex in developing countries and the vaginoplasty operations Western women undergo in order to tighten their vagina.

"They"re having their own genital mutilation," she said of the women who opt for these procedures.

"It"s just a little more advanced and expensive than putting creams in your vagina.

"But isn"t the principal the same? It"s incredibly unhealthy as well to go have your vagina tightened because you want to have a honeymoon experience or have your partner think you"re youthful."

It is one of the biggest markets in the tourist hot spot of Langowan, Indonesia. But you won"t want to face this on an empty stomach. From battered snake to spit-roasted bats, the smorgasbord of traditional delicacies on offer are not exactly appetising.

Live dogs sit in cages before they are roasted with blowtorches on the pavement. Three-metre-long snakes lie sprawled across the tables of blood-covered carcasses.

Other delights include pickled rats, boar legs, and bite-size bats on sticks. And roasted lizards are cut open and displayed on their backs - with their insides on show. The market, in the northern region of Sulawesi, was marred by controversy in 1993 after government inspectors found sellers to be trading babirusa, an endangered type of wild pig.

Despite numerous regulations put in place, it took years to eliminate the trade. However, the bizarre market has now become something of a tourist attraction - but few are willing to taste their way through the full menu.

http://i.footio.com/images/2016/07/05/a1lWiQ.jpg

Not far from Langowan, the Tomohon Traditional Market also attracts a fair few horrified holidaymakers - and families planning their evening meal. They casually survey the torched animals - lying frozen with a facial expression of horror - before selecting an entire snake or dog to serve up to the kids later.

Travel blogger Raymond Walsh described the smell of the Tomohon market on his blog www.manonthelam.com.

Mr Walsh said: "In a word, appalling. There"s something about the air that changes when there"s that much death around.

"It hangs heavy and it made me queasy and light-headed at the same time... It"s the first time I"d ever encountered anything like it."

Flyers and letters warning that bomb attacks will be carried out at a number of locations in Batam and Bintan in the Riau archipelago have surfaced, an Indonesian news website has reported.

According to Batam Today, the flyers claim that attacks would occur at the Batam Center Ferry Terminal and Nagoya on the island of Batam, as well as the Bintan Telani Ferry Terminal and Tanjung Pinang on the island of Bintan.

The attacks are reportedly meant to target travellers from Johor and Singapore.

The letters also mention that the militants planning the attacks had arrived in Riau two weeks ago.

Tanjung Pinang district police chief Kristian Siagian confirmed the existence of the flyers and said that investigations by the authorities are ongoing.

"In the aftermath of the bomb attack on the police headquarters in Solo, we have increased security measures in Tanjung Pinang, especially around vital targets such as police headquarters and ferry terminals," he said.

Meanwhile, Bintan police chief Febrianto Guntur Sunoto urged residents to remain calm.

"We hope that residents do not panic. We have acted on the information and law enforcement officers have increased security levels here, especially at the locations that were mentioned in the flyers," he said.

On July 4, Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) issued a travel advisory due to the recent spate of terrorist attacks on civilian targets such as international airports and areas popular with tourists and locals.

Citing the Dhaka and Baghdad attacks, MFA advised Singaporeans to eRegister their whereabouts when travelling.

The Jakarta administration plans to increase public participation in the city’s efforts to prevent terror attacks on the heels of the recent suicide bombing in Surakarta.

Jakarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said on Wednesday that the administration would maximize the role of the Early Awareness Society Forum (FKDM) to detect suspicious behavior in the city.

"FKDM is like an intelligence body for the administration. We've obtained a lot of information from it so we will strengthen the role of the body," Djarot said.

The deputy governor said he had talked about the plan with representatives from the Indonesian Military and the Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopinda) on Tuesday evening.

"We are coordinating with Forkopinda to ensure the city's security because we assume that there are some people linked to the [Surakarta] suicide bomber who want to enter the capital," he said at his official residence in East Kuningan, South Jakarta.

Humankind it seems has a definite desire to somehow transcend the amorphous barrier between life and death to communicate with the spirit world. Throughout history we see examples of rituals, rites, and a variety of other efforts to make contact with the afterlife, to somehow connect with what lies beyond and with the dead that inhabit these realms. Even in modern days we can see such things, ranging from elaborate New Age spells, to channelling and seances, all the way to the seemingly innocent game of the Ouija board. Yet while the prospect of making actual contact with spirits from beyond may seem frightening to some, perhaps nowhere else is it more so than in a popular Indonesian game in which the dead are called forth to possess and animate decidedly creepy dolls crafted just for this purpose. If you think ghosts and haunted dolls are spooky, then you are sure to find the game of Jelangkung to be very disturbing indeed. It is an ancient ritual that rolls together all of the weirder elements of channelling, seances, and the Ouija board to create an experience that manages to become somehow scarier than all of them combined.

The Indonesian game of Jelangkung plays out like sort of a mix between a seance and a session of the Ouija board, with the addition of freaky little dolls thrown into the mix, during which the “players” attempt to draw ghosts or spirits into specially made dolls in order to communicate with them. The game is typically played by 3 or 4 people, often in haunted places, and almost always late at night between the hours of 10PM and midnight, typically on a night of a bright moon. The game is said to trace its origins back 1,500 years to the Chinese game of Cai Lan Gong, which roughly translates to “Vegetable Basket spirit” because a vegetable basket was once used to sit the dolls in. In the Chinese version of the game, the gods Poyang and Moyang were invited to step into the dolls to act as a sort of divination device. It was a game which was often played by teenagers during moon festivals and the name of which became the Indonesian name Jelangkung. The Indonesian version took things a step further, stepping beyond the origins of merely being an innocent method of divination for children and becoming a general and rather sinister way to channel all manner of spirits into our world and almost always performed by adults.

http://www.picsbees.com/images/2016/07/09/a2.jpg

There are several things needed to play the game. First is the dolls themselves. They are usually crafted from a coconut shell for a head and with a wooden body, and it is said to be imperative that they be dressed in regular clothing, with a face drawn onto them. In some versions, a key is tied to a necklace around the necks of the dolls. The hands of the dolls are fitted with some sort of writing instrument with which to write the responses from any spirits successfully called forth. The next important thing needed is incense, which is burned throughout the ritual and supposedly helps to lure in the spirits. Also needed is some form of stationary, something for the dolls to write on once they are possessed, with the paper often being adorned with letters of the alphabet in advance, strikingly similar to a Ouija board. Some people use a blackboard rather than paper, and chalk tied to the doll’s hand rather than pen or pencil.

When the game is ready to begin, the players will surround the doll and cast a spell or chant a mantra or incantation, beckoning any nearby spirits to come into the doll. In some places, such as the island of Java, a scarecrow is used instead of a doll, which is no less terrifying. The spell or mantra will be repeated as many times as needed until the doll has been deemed to be possessed, usually due to a perceived increased weight or by the doll suddenly tipping over moving inexplicably. In some versions the dolls is held upright by two handlers during the ritual. The types of spirits that are said to enter the doll are numerous, but are usually the ghosts of people who have died tragically, such as through suicide, murder, or a horrific accident, although sometimes more malignant entities such as demons are believed to enter. In general, it is uncertain of exactly what will enter the doll and there is no control over such things, with the ritual basically being an open invitation to any apparition, spirit, or demon that happens to be in the vicinity.

http://www.picsbees.com/images/2016/07/09/a3.jpg

Once the spirit, ghost, or other entity has entered the doll, it is customary to ask it to introduce itself, after which it will allegedly write its name down on the provided paper with the writing instrument attached to the doll’s hand. It will also usually explain who it was and how it had died. After this, the players may ask whatever they want of the spirit, the answers to which it will either write on the surface provided or circle in letters which have been prepared beforehand through the writing instrument on the doll’s hand. For “Yes” or “No” questions, the doll will dip the key around its neck into either a cup of coffee or a glass of water, or simply circle a “Yes” or “No” written on the board or paper. The kinds of questions asked of the spirits are diverse, ranging from simple or childish questions such as who likes who, to which lottery numbers will win, to numerous questions about the future or luck of the players, to more somber and pressing questions such as who will die first or about diagnosing illness or unconventional ways to treat diseases.

Although over generations the game has become popular in Indonesia for young and old people alike to play out looking for a good scare, older Indonesians have long warned against dabbling with it, especially for people who are not well versed in the occult or magic. It is said that the game holds many inherit dangers, not the least of which is that it is said to be much harder to coax the spirit back into its realm than it is to call it forth, and this could lead to the entity deciding to stay and run amok to cause all manner of trouble ranging from poltergeist activity to haunting the house to actual full blown possession of one or more of the players present. It is not uncommon for the ghost or ghosts present to cause mischief during the game as it is, so if they refuse to leave it is believed that they can cause all sorts of strife. Even if the entity is in fact willing to leave it is said that if the players end the game abruptly, or fail to properly say goodbye to the spirit residing within the doll, then it can become angry and lash out at the players. It is certainly not a game recommended for the faint of heart or for those not fully prepared to deal with what they may call forth into our reality. For these reasons, although popular, Jelangkung is mostly seen as something that is forbidden to do, as it is seen as trifling with forces we do not yet fully understand. In many ways it all sounds so very similar to the myths and warnings surrounding the use of the western Ouija board.

http://www.picsbees.com/images/2016/07/09/a4.jpg

The mystique and fear surrounding Jelangkung have become very entrenched in Indonesia, where it has truly become the stuff of horror movies, spawning various horror films and TV shows, including the hit Indonesian movie Jelangkung in 2001, which was followed by two sequels, Tusuk Jelangkung (2003), and Jelangkung 3 (2007). It seems that although this may appear to be merely to be an urban legend or spooky campfire story, it is a very real phenomena for many Indonesians, one that has managed to inspire both wonder and terror. But is any of it real? Are there ways to communicate with the land of the dead, to converse with the spirits of the dead or even demons? Whether there are or not, it seems that human beings will always be inclined to at least try. For it seems that the powerful lure of making contact with the dead by whatever means is as old as time itself and is unlikely to fade anytime soon.

Most Indonesian cities implement special regulations on businesses during the Holy Month of Ramadan. In Jakarta, for example, restaurants are allowed to remain open but nightlife venues like nightclubs are only allowed to operate during limited hours under certain restrictions.

Things are... a little stricter in the satellite city of Bogor. Recently, the Bogor Police released a circular announcing cafes and warung nasi are only allowed to be open during Ramadan from 4pm to 9pm and from 2am to 4am for the pre-dawn suhur meal. Not only that, the circular prohibited those who are not fasting from eating in those restaurants.

And the police are apparently taking the circular quite seriously. Yesterday, the police raided a group of food stalls in the Leuwiliang sub-district of Bogor at lunch time. There they found 13 people eating food from the stalls.

The police brought the 13 to the district office where they were lectured and sentenced to do push-ups.

http://polyfedelicio.us/imgs/images/2016/07/08/z2.jpg

"They were secured because they were found to be eating lunch at the warungs. So we brought them to the district office and we provided them enlightenment, so they will be respectful of citizens who are fasting," Leuwiliang Subdistrict Head Chairuka Judhianto told Detik on Thursday.

"As for the stall owners, we warned them. If they are found to be open again at noon, we will later seal the stall," Judhianto added.

The regent of Bogor, Nurhayanti, praised the raid, telling Detik in a text message: "I really appreciate the steps taken by the subdistrict of Leuwiliang as the government of Bogor has already released a circular concerning the provisions of the opening hours of the restaurant during the holy month of Ramadan.”

Police did not announce if all of those punished with push-ups were Muslim, but Nurhayanti said the circular requested that all residents of Bogor create a “positive climate” by not doing things that could ruin the atmosphere of the fasting month or lead to "security problems" (ie vigilante raids) that would disturb the peace. Nurhayanti also said that this was important to maintain inter-religious harmony.

It will also usually explain who it was and how it had died. While Indonesia may be known as having some of the toughest drug trafficking laws in the region, neighboring Singapore and Malaysia are not exactly known for their lax stance on narcotics either. Nevertheless, authorities in Indonesia apparently view passengers coming from the two countries as being particularly likely to smuggle drugs into our archipelago and as a result are planning to subject them to greatly increased scrutiny.

The head of Soekarno-Hatta Airport’s management, PT Angkasa Pura II, recently told the media that they will tighten security inspections on passengers arriving from Singapore and Malaysia due to frequent drug smuggling attempts.

"So we discussed with the Ministry of Transportation that there are many unwanted things entering Indonesia from the two countries closest to us, Singapore and Malaysia. Therefore, Pak Minister [of Transportation Ignasius Jonan] will approve random checks for passengers from the two countries," said Budi Karya Sumadi, president of PT Angkasa Pura II, last Friday as quoted by Merdeka.

Budi said that the airport was just waiting for the decree from the Ministry of Transportation to allow them to tighten their security procedures. Transport Minister Ignasius had already expressed his support for the proposal the previous day.

In addition to allowing for random checks, the proposal would also allow airport authorities to deploy plainclothes officers to target suspicious passengers for further screening.

Commenting on media reports about the increased scrutiny on Malaysian passengers, Malaysian Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said he had not been informed about the security changes but said that Malaysia’s Immigration and Customs Departments already ensured that no illegal items were smuggled out of their country.

Despite the renewed threat of executions for drug traffickers, Indonesian authorities claim that cases of drugs being smuggled into the country have steeply risen over the last year.

A prisoner at the Salemba Penitentiary in Central Jakarta named Anwar (a.k.a. Rijal) managed to escape from the prison last Thursday, allegedly with the help of his wife.

Police believe that Anwar, who was convicted of raping and murdering a 12-year-old, was able to sneak out of the prison along with visitors to the facility while disguised as a women using clothes smuggled to him by his spouse, Ade Irma.

"Allegedly Anwar fled while wearing an abaya [a loose fitting robe-like dress worn by some Muslim women] and headscarf brought to him by his wife," Cempaka Putih Police Chief Commissioner Iwan Gunadi said on Friday, as quoted by Tempo.

Iwan said that the prison was full of prisoners last Thursday, which was the second day of the Idul Fitri holiday, which helped Anwar to escape. He also said that the prison’s new warden only realized that Anwar had escaped at 10pm that day when guards were doing a check of each cell block.

"Currently, officers of the Cempaka Putih Police are pursuing Anwar," Iwan said.

Anwar was convicted of the rape and murder of a 12-year-old student on June 23 of this year and was given a life sentence by the Central Jakarta criminal court..

Even though it hasn’t been officially released in Indonesia yet, Pokemon GO fever has swept across the country. The augmented reality smartphone game from Nintendo has addicted countless Indonesians and caused government officials to freak out over possible security breaches the app could cause.

While top officials fret over Pokemon hunters accidentally revealing state secrets, a much more realistic concern is that players may end up hurting themselves by having their eyes glued to their mobile screens while they are driving or wandering into traffic.

That concern was recently raised by Central Java Police Chief General Condro Kirono, who warned Pokemon hunters not to play while behind the wheels of their cars.

"Pokemon Go players that are out looking for pokemon while driving are very dangerous. Their concentration will be split between looking for a Pokemon and looking at the road," Condro said on Monday as quoted by Tribunnews.
Condro said that he had instructed his officers to investigate the cause of all car accidents in his region to find out how many had been caused by players of the game.

When asked by a reporter about whether there were any police officers playing Pokemon GO, Condro said they they were banned from playing the game.

"I definitely forbid it, it can cause their work to be neglected. Those that say they are going out on patrol might actually just be going out to look for Pokemon. So I forbid my officers to play Pokemon Go," he said.

Several top Indonesian officials have stated their concerns that the phenomenally popular mobile game Pokemon GO could potentially cause security breaches in Indonesia, considering the augmented reality game pushes players to explore their surroundings while collecting GPS and photo data.

Many people dismissed their worries as ridiculous and overblown, but those officials no doubt feel vindicated over news that a Frenchman visiting Indonesia for business entered a military complex in Cirebon, West Java, yesterday while playing Pokemon GO.

According to authorities, the 27-year-old French citizen, identified as Romain Pierre, apparently should have known he was going into a restricted area (maybe he thought there was a Vaporeon hiding inside the base).

"He jumped over the base’s portal, and was then secured," West Java Police spokesman Yusri Yunus said on Tuesday as quoted by Detik.

The incident took place on Monday night at about 11pm. Romain was said to be jogging around the area in search of the virtual creatures.

"He said he was hunting Pokemon," Yusri told the media.

Romain was detained by military security personnel and then handed over to the Cirebon Police for questioning. The Frenchman told the police he was in Indonesia for business and was staying with other members of his group in a nearby hotel.

The French citizen was released by police at about 2am on Tuesday morning and returned to the hotel after police checked that his passport and visa were in order.

Long time ago in West Java, lived a beautiful girl named Dayang Sumbi. She was also smart and clever. Her beauty and intelligence made a prince from the heavenly kingdom of Kahyangan desire her as his wife. The prince asked permission from his father to marry Dayang Sumbi. People from Kahyangan could never live side by side with humans, but his father approved on one condition, when they had a child, the prince would transform into a dog.

The prince accepted the condition. They get married and lived happily in the woods until Dayang Sumbi gave birth to a baby boy. The prince then changed into a dog named Tumang. Their son is named Sangkuriang. He was very smart and handsome like his father.

Everyday, he hunted animals and looked for fruits to eat. One day, when he was hunting, Sangkuriang accidentally killed Tumang. His arrow missed the deer he was targeting and hit Tumang instead. He went home and tells her mother about the dog.“What?” Dayang Sumbi was appalled. Driven by sadness and anger, she grabbed a weaving tool and hit Sangkuriang’s head with it. Dayang Sumbi was so sad; she didn’t pay any attention to Sangkuriang and started to cry. Sangkuriang feel sad and also confused. How can his mother love a dog more than him?

Sangkuriang then decided to go away from their home and went on a journey. In the morning, Dayang Sumbi finally stopped crying. She started to feel better, so she went to find Sangkuriang. But her son was no where to be found. She looked everywhere but still couldn’t find him.

Finally, she went home with nothing. She was exhausted. She fell asleep, and in her dream, she meets her husband.“Dayang Sumbi, don’t be sad. Go look for my body in the woods and get the heart. Soak it with water, and use the water to bathe, and you will look young forever,” said the prince in her dream. After bathing with the water used to soak the dog’s heart, Dayang Sumbi looked more beautiful and even younger. And time passed by. Sangkuriang on his journey stopped at a village and met and fell in love with a beautiful girl.He didn’t realize that the village was his homeland and the beautiful girl was his own mother, Dayang Sumbi.

Their love grew naturally and he asked the girl to marry him. One day, Sangkuriang was going on a hunt. He asked Dayang Sumbi to fix the turban on his head. Dayang Sumbi was startled when she saw a scar on his head at the same place where she, years ago, hit Sangkuriang on the head. After the young man left, Dayang Sumbi prayed for guidance.

After praying, she became convinced that the young man was indeed her missing son. She realized that she had to do something to prevent Sangkuriang from marrying her. But she did not wish to disappoint him by cancelling the wedding. So, although she agreed to marry Sangkuriang, she would do so only on the condition that he provides her with a lake and built a beautiful boat, all in one night. Sangkuriang accepted this condition without a doubt. He had spent his youth studying magical arts. After the sun went down, Sangkuriang went to the hill. Then he called a group of genie to build a dam around Citarum River. Then, he commands the genies to cut down trees and build a boat.

A few moments before dawn, Sangkuriang and his genie servants almost finished the boat. Dayang Sumbi, who had been spying on him, realised that Sangkuriang would fulfill the condition she had set. Dayang Sumbi immediately woke all the women in the village and asked them to wave a long red scarf.

All the women in the village were waving red scarf, making it look as if dawn was breaking. Deceived by false dawn, the cock crowed and farmers rose for the new day. Sangkuriang’s genie servants immediately dropped their work and ran for cover from the sun, which they feared. Sangkuriang grew furious.

With all his anger, he kicked the unfinished boat. The boat flew and landed on a valley. The boat then became a mountain, called Mount Tangkuban Perahu (Tangkuban means upturned or upside down, and Perahu means boat).

With his power, he destroyed the dam. The water drained from the lake becoming a wide plain and nowadays became a city called Bandung (from the word Bendung, which means Dam)

Bandung, capital of Indonesia’s West Java province, is a large city set amid volcanoes and tea plantations. It's known for colonial and art deco architecture, a lively, university-town feel and – thanks to its 768m elevation – relatively cool tropical weather. Bandung is also a shopping destination, with fashion outlets clustered along Jalan Setiabudi and Jalan Riau and in the Dago district.

Glad u like it bro.

Since there is so much on Batam today, here's a quite popular 1 from the island to share....

Mah Bongsu and a Snake
http://polyfedelicio.us/imgs/images/2016/07/22/SUNGAIJODOH.jpg

ONCE upon a time in Batam, lived an orphan named Mah Bongsu. She was a nice girl. Mah Bongsu was poor. To earn a living, she worked as a maid at a rich woman’s house, her name was Mak Piah. She had a daughter named Mayang. Mah Bongsu and Mayang were at the same age.

Mak Piah was a mean lady. She always asked Mah Bongsu to work hard, she often hit Mah Bongsu and sometimes she did not gave enough food to Mah Bongsu. Mah Bongsu was helpless. She could not do anything.

She was alone in this world and she did not have any other place to stay. Everyday she prayed to God. She wanted to have a better life. Mah Bongsu was washing the clothes in the river. Suddenly she saw a big snake swimming towards her. Mah Bongsu was scared. She wanted to run away. However, she saw the snake was wounded. It was bleeding. Mah Bongsu felt sorry to the snake. Carefully, she brought the snake home. She put the snake in her room and healed the wound.

When Mah Bongsu was healing the wound, a piece of the snake’s skin was removed. Mah Bongsu took it. Amazingly the skin turned into gold. Mah Bongsu was happy. Everyday the snake removed its skin and the skin always turned into gold. Mah Bongsu collected all the gold and save it. She wanted to sell it later. Mah Bongsu sold all the gold and she became a rich girl. She did not work for Mak Piah anymore. She was richer than Mak Piah. Mah Bongsu also helped all the poor people. She bought a big house and she brought the snake with her.

Mak Piah was very jealous. She was so curious. She wanted to know how Mah Bongsu got the wealth. Secretly, she went to Mah Bongsu’s house. She saw Mah Bongsu was healing a snake.

Later, Mak Piah asked her daughter, Mayang, to go to the river. She asked Mayang to find a wounded snake.

And when Mayang finally found a wounded snake, she brought it home. Sadly, the snake bit her and poisoned her. Mayang instantly died. Mak Piah was scared, she tried to run away. Just right before she left the house, the snake was able to bite her. And she also died then.

Meanwhile, the wounded snake at Mah Bongsu’s house was finally healed. Amazingly, the snake turned into a handsome man.

“Thank you, Mah Bongsu."

"Actually, I’m a prince. A witch cursed me into a snake . And thanks to you I changed into a man now. Because you already helped me, I want to propose you to be my wife. Will you marry me?” asked the prince.

Mah Bongsu was so happy. She accepted the proposal and lived with the prince. Since then people named the river where Mah Bongsu found her husband as Sungai Jodoh. It means the river of soul mate.

The Communications and Information Ministry has called on YouTube to remove a clip called "Lelaki Kardus" (Cardboard Man) due to "harmful" content, on the request of the Child Protection Agency (LPA).

The video features a song sung by a little girl about her father who has married another woman and become a two-timer, and the girl's friends insulting the man with foul language.

The ministry's spokesman Ismail Cawidu said the officials had contacted Lelaki Kardus' songwriter Achmad, who had agreed to remove his video from YouTube.

"However, many people have copied the video and re-posted it on YouTube. The ministry will now send a letter to YouTube to ask that the video be removed," Ismail said as quoted by Antara news agency on Thursday.

Meanwhile, LPA chairman Seto Mulyadi and secretary-general Samsul Ridwan criticized the people who produced and helped distributed the video, saying that the content degraded human dignity and was damaging for children.

Having children perform adult content is similar, the LPA says, to abusing them, especially if the video is intended for commercial purposes, since it is arguably child exploitation.

The LPA also urged people not to disseminate the video any more and not to post negative comments about children if they happened to stumble upon the video in the internet.

Ghost stories originate from all over the world where there is paranormal activity and unexplainable occurrences that disrupt our daily lives. Whilst I'm sure many of you have read your fair share of creepy accounts of ghosts and ghouls, here are 7 more that you may not have come across.

The following stories/myth originate from Indonesia, which goes deep down their culture and tradition. Some of the most terrifying supernatural beings come from this part of the world.

Take a look and be warned, after this you MAY wish to sleep with the lights on tonight!

1. Wewe Gombel

Wewe Gombel is a female supernatural being or ghost in Javanese and Sundanese mythology. It is said that she kidnaps children.

This myth is taught to encourage children to be cautious and to stay at home at night. Traditionally, the Wewe Gombel is represented as a woman with long, hanging breasts. Modern representations include vampire-like fangs. This is a popular spirit that also appears in comics.

http://gambarku.net/images/2016/07/26/asal-usul-wewe-gombel-yang-bikin-geger.jpg

The ghost was named Wewe Gombel because it is related to an event that, according to ancient folklore, happened in Bukit Gombel, Semarang, where long ago a married couple lived. They had been married for years, but as time went by the husband realized that his wife was barren and stopped loving her. The husband became wayward, neglecting his wife and leaving her alone for long periods of time, so that she lived in sorrow. One day she followed him and caught him in a sexual relationship with another woman. Hurt by her husband's betrayal she became furious and killed him. Faced with the crime, angry neighbors gathered in a mob and chased her from the village. Despairing at the ostracization and continual harassment, she committed suicide.

After death her vengeful spirit became Wewe Gombel. Sundanese folklore says that she dwells in the crown of the Arenga pinnata palm, where she has her nest and keeps the children she catches. She does not harm them and once they are under her clutches they are not afraid of her.

Local traditions say that the children she abducts have been mistreated or neglected by their parents. She treats the children lovingly as a grandmother would, taking care of them and protecting them until their parents repent, at which point she returns them.

Wewe Gombel has affinities with the ghost known as Hantu Kopek in Malay folklore.

2. Sundel bolong

In Indonesian mythology, a Sundel Bolong is a mythical ghost from the archipelago which is generally described as a woman with beautiful long hair and a long white dress (her form is similar to Kuntilanak). The name and myth is closely linked to prostitutes, meaning a "prostitute with a hole in her", in reference to the large hole which is said to appear in her back.

36878

In folklore, Sundel Bolong is said to be the soul of a woman who died when she was pregnant and therefore gave birth in her grave, or who died during childbirth and the baby came out from her back (this is the reason why the hole was created in her back),which is concealed from men by her long black hair. Sundel Bolong is also said to be a sensitive spirit and, if rejected by a man, she is said to castrate him.

3. Genderuwo

A Genderuwo is a terrible sex-mad ghost who usually takes the form of a man. Local culture stipulates that they come from a male who died before his time, mostly by unnatural causes. Unable to accept their death, the spirit morphs into a gigantic titan.

36880

Resembling a demon with a large black body, long hair, pointy claws and a red death-stare, it is reported that this spirit can be distinguished by the nauseating smell of rotting flesh. If you recognize the pungent odor in the middle of the night, it usually means a Genderuwo is near-by.

Obsessed with sex and teasing helpless female victims, to a great extent they are an Indonesian version of an incubus. Legends say that the Genderuwo can also change its appearance to entice people, attracting women to have sex with it thinking it is their partner.

There are also reports of women getting possessed by the spirit, resulting in a higher sex-drive.

4. Kuntilanak

A kuntilanak or pontianak has the typical appearance of a ghost (e.g. a spiritual entity dressed in white). The female spirit’s face is covered by its long dark hair. However, it is also said, that a kuntilanak is able to transform in to an attractive lady. Though in fact the kuntilanak is a ghostly spirit, yet it can appear as if it is a real human being. Its human appearance is mainly characterized by female beauty. With its female physical attractiveness the kuntilanak attempts to seduce men. The reasons as to why the kuntilanak is after men remains a topic of debate. It is suggested, that in response to a violent death, the woman’s spirit is fueled by a burning desire for revenge against members of the opposite sex (i.e., men). In this way, then, a kuntilanak initiates retaliation on men because of the grievance of being unable to give birth to the child.

36882

When the kuntilanak unveils its demonic nature it appears as a terrifying creature indeed. With its hands featuring unusually long, sharp nails the kuntilanak devours the body of its victim. In a desperate search for the unborn baby, the female ghost thus preys upon the male’s organs voraciously. Though the kuntilanak will only turn into a harmful ghost when the coffin nail is removed from the back of its neck or tip of the head, otherwise its appearance will remain like that of a most charming woman.

36884

Since the kuntilanak generally is considered to be the ghost of a deceased person, it therefore makes sense that the spirit remains in a state of chaos and confusion after it died a violent death. Failure to recognize, understand, and accept its death caused the spirit to get stuck between this world and the next. Being trapped in an intermediate realm, the kuntilanak thus accumulates unwholesome karma through committing evil deeds. This accumulation of bad karma prevents the wandering spirit to pass on to the next life where it awaits a more fortunate rebirth. For this reason, dukuns and mystics often like to help these spirits accumulate merit and virtue so that they can proceed to the next life. Thus, when a violent death of a pregnant female has been reported, the next of kin often call a dukun for help in order to prevent the spirit of the deceased person turning into a kuntilanak.

5. Pocong

A 'pocong' is the ghost of a dead person trapped in its shroud. Traditionally, when a person dies, the body is wrapped in a long piece of cloth following Muslim burial rites. The white fabric covers the deceased head to toe.

36885

According to local beliefs, the soul of the dead stays on earth for 40 days after death. When the ties aren't released in this period, it becomes trapped in its burial shroud, with the body emerging from the grave to seek release. After the ties are released, the soul leaves the earth never to be seen again.

Interestingly, as the body's feet are tied, the ghost actually hops because it cannot walk.

6. Thuyul/Tuyul

This is the ghost of an unborn baby or a child who has died. Many believe that the Thuyuls are thieves, stealing money from local houses whilst resembling pale babies in diapers.

36890

According to sources, you can prevent a haunting by leaving a can of beans out on the porch. With this, they will get distracted and count the beans instead of the money.

7. Palasik

Believed to be a manifestation of high-level black magic witches in some areas in Sumatra, Indonesia. Palasiks are known as blood sucking creatures. The Palasiks eats infants while they are still in their mother's womb or a newborn baby. They are often seen digging on a dead baby's grave.

Many believed that being a Palasik is hereditary. When someone in a family is known as a Palasik practitioner, their son or daughter will become a Palasik too. To maintain their secrecy, their community would hold unholy rituals to mate and wed their children to other Palasiks and live in secluded villages far from others. The curse of a Palasik through the practice of witchcraft can persist through seven generations

36889

Palasik practitioners appear to be a normal people in general. The difference is when they begin to release their heads along with their internal organs to reveal their original appearance. In an attempt to end this evil, entire families of the curse would be either banished or executed.

The myths about these supernatural beings were very popular across the Southeast Asias with different names and similar lore among each country.

Once upon a time, there was a little boy, who was poor, dirty, and smelly, came into a little village. He was very hungry and weak. He knocked at every door and asked for some food, but nobody cared about him. Nobody wanted to help the little boy. Finally, a generous old woman helped him. She gave him shelter and a meal. When the boy wanted to leave, the old woman gave him a “lesung”, a big wooden mortar for pounding rice.

She reminded him, “Please remember, if there is a flood you must save yourself. Use this “lesung” as a boat”.

The little boy was happy and thanked the old woman. The little boy continued his journey. While he was passing through the village, where he had asked for food, he saw many people gathering on the field. The boy came closer and saw a stick stuck in the ground. People challenged each other to pull out that stick. Everybody tried, but nobody succeeded.

“Can I try?” asked the little boy.

The crowd laughed mockingly. The boy wanted to try his luck so he stepped forward and pulled out the stick. He could do it very easily. Everybody was dumbfounded. Suddenly, from the hole left by stick, water spouted out. It did not stop until it flooded the village. And no one was saved from the water except the little boy and the generous old woman who gave him shelter and meal. As she told him, he used the “lesung” as a boat and picked up the old woman. The whole village became a huge lake.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo should reverse his decision to appoint Wiranto as the coordinating political, legal and security affairs minister for he was indicted for crimes against humanity, a rights group has said.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Wiranto was the Indonesian Military (TNI) commander in 1999, when the country’s army and military-backed militias carried out numerous atrocities against East Timorese after they voted for independence.

In February 2003, it said, Wiranto was indicted for crimes against humanity by the UN-sponsored Special Panels for Serious Crimes of the Dili District Court and named a chief suspect by the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM). The charges against Wiranto led to the US decision in 2014 to place Wiranto and five others accused of crimes in East Timor (now Timor Leste) on a visa watchlist that could bar them from entering the country.

“President Jokowi’s decision to appoint Wiranto to his Cabinet is a slap in the face to Indonesians seeking accountability for past atrocities in Indonesia,” HRW deputy Asia director Phelim Kine said on Thursday.

“Wiranto’s alleged complicity in murder, arson, and mass forced expulsions in East Timor in 1999 entitles him to a fair criminal trial, not a seat in the cabinet.”

HRW says Wiranto’s appointment calls into question President Jokowi’s commitment to pursuing accountability for human rights violations. Those abuses include the 1965-1966 massacres and 11 high-priority human rights cases in Papua.

Wiranto’s predecessor, Luhut Pandjaitan, had led the government’s efforts toward accountability, which included plans to exhume mass graves from the 1965-1966 massacres and the creation of an investigation team to probe abuses in Papua.

"By offering Wiranto a Cabinet position, President Jokowi is undermining his own important efforts to obtain accountability for the terrible abuses of Indonesia’s past,” Kine said.

The EU has called on the Indonesian government to halt all executions and to consider joining a large community of more than 140 states that have abolished the death penalty entirely or have adopted a moratorium.

The EU made the statement in a response to the planned executions of up to 14 convicts in Indonesia.

“The EU is opposed to capital punishment without exception and has consistently called for its universal abolition,” it said in a statement on Thursday.

“The death penalty is a cruel and inhumane punishment, which fails to act as a deterrent and represents an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity.”

Also on Thursday, the US-based group Human Rights Watch (HRW) said it opposed the death penalty in all circumstances because of its inherent cruelty. “Indonesia’s use of the death penalty is contrary to international human rights law, statements of UN human rights experts and various UN bodies,” it said.

Citing Law and Human Rights Ministry data, HRW revealed 133 people were on death row in Indonesia as of January 2015. They included 57 who were convicted of drug trafficking, two for terrorist offenses and the remaining 74 for murder or robbery.

HRW says human rights law upholds every human being’s “inherent right to life” and limits the death penalty to “the most serious crimes,” typically crimes resulting in death or serious bodily harm.

“Indonesia should join the many countries already committed to the UN General Assembly’s Dec.18, 2007 resolution calling for a moratorium on executions, a move by UN member countries toward abolition of the death penalty.”

Indonesia executed four drug traffickers on Friday and said it had not yet decided when 10 others convicted of drug crimes would be put to death.

Deputy Attorney-General Noor Rachmad said one Indonesian and three Nigerians were executed by firing squad not long after midnight local time.

The government had said earlier in the week that 14 people on death row, mostly foreigners, would be executed on the Nusa Kambangan prison island.

Those executed Friday were Indonesian Freddy Budiman and Seck Osmane from Senegal and Nigerians Michael Titus and Humphrey Jefferson. The bodies of Osmane and Titus will be flown to their home country and Jefferson will be buried in Indonesia.

Relatives, rights groups and foreign governments had urged Indonesia to spare all 14 lives but it was unclear whether that had any influence on the decision to not carry out all the executions at once. Lawyers and rights groups had raised serious doubts about the legitimacy of the conviction of Jefferson as well as the convictions of an Indonesian woman and a Pakistani man.

It was the third set of executions under President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo who was elected in 2014 and campaigned on promises to improve human rights in Indonesia.

"It was not a pleasant thing but it was to implement the law," said Rachmad. "The executions are only aimed at halting drug crimes."

He said a decision about other executions would be announced at a later time.

A convoy of 17 ambulances, most carrying coffins, had arrived Thursday morning at the port town nearest Nusa Kambangan. Officials began tightening security at the prison several days ago, with more than 1,000 police sent to Cilacap, the port town, and the island.

Last year, Indonesia executed 14 people convicted of drug crimes, mostly foreigners, sparking an international outcry.

Pakistani drug convict Zulfiqar Ali escaped execution in the early hours on Friday on Nusakambangan prison island in Cilacap, Central Java, after a comprehensive study of his case, an official said on Friday.

The decision to not execute Ali was made after a thorough study, junior prosecutor for general crimes Noor Rochmad told Antara news agency without giving further details.

The government executed four drug convicts at 1:46 a.m. on Friday, a last-minute change after confirming on Friday that 14 convicts would face the firing squad. No official statement has been issued by the Attorney General's Office over the change in the number of people executed.

There had been mounting demands for President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to halt the executions, the third round during his presidency, over possible miscarriages of justice.

The government of Pakistan had sought a postponement of Ali's execution and requested a review of his trial. Pakistani Ambassador Aqil Naseem said the government of Pakistan respected the Indonesian legal system, but believed that the legal process against Ali was flawed. Ali was not provided the opportunity of a fair trial, he said, and pointed out that the prosecutors had sought a life sentence but the judges handed down the death penalty.

Ali, 52, was arrested in 2004 for the possession of 350 grams of heroin and was sentenced to death by the Tangerang District Court in 2005.

New team: President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, accompanied by Vice President Jusuf Kalla, unveils his new aides following a Cabinet reshuffle at the State Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday.

After two years watching several of his ministers bicker and expose their policy differences to the public, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo told his newly reformed Cabinet on Wednesday that all ministers had to work as a team and that they only reported to him.

“The first thing I want to say, especially to new ministers, there’s no such thing as a vision or mission of a minister, we only have the vision and mission of the President and Vice President. All ministers must follow the vision and mission that we outline and all policies decided during either plenary or limited Cabinet meetings,” Jokowi said in his opening remarks to the meeting.

Speaking in the first Cabinet meeting after the reshuffle, Jokowi also said that he was fully in charge and that ministers should not take initiatives on issues not decided by him.

Jokowi tells ministers in Cabinet meeting that he is in charge of all issues. President also instructs ministers to coordinate better.

Four hours before giving the warning, President Jokowi announced his new Cabinet line-up, which included nine new faces.

The new faces in the Cabinet are Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Villages, Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration Minister Eko Putro Sanjoyo, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, Culture and Education Minister Muhadjir Effendy, Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita, Trade Minister Airlangga Hartarto, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Archandra Tahar and Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Asman Abnur.

While the chief objective of the latest Cabinet shake-up was to accommodate the demands of political parties in his ruling coalition, especially the Golkar and National Mandate (PAN) parties, which only recently joined his government, many view the reshuffle as an effort by Jokowi to bring order to his Cabinet.

The dismissals of outgoing coordinating maritime affairs minister Rizal Ramli, energy and mineral resources minister Sudirman Said and transportation minister Ignasius Jonan have been seen as punishment for their penchant for publicly airing their policy disagreements and making controversial statements.

Sudirman had engaged in a string of tussles with then coordinating political, legal and security affairs minister Luhut Pandjaitan and Rizal.

Sudirman and Rizal engaged in a bitter seven-month spat over the Masela gas block development, which ended only after Jokowi decided to back Rizal’s proposal to build an onshore liquefied national gas (LNG) plant.

Rizal started a fresh controversy recently by picking a fight with Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama over the Jakarta Bay reclamation project. Rizal insisted on terminating the development of Islet G off the coast of North Jakarta, while Ahok has insisted that the project is legal and in line with a 1995 decree, which Rizal claimed to be now void.

Jonan, meanwhile, was in the spotlight for decisions that many deemed as laying stumbling blocks for Jokowi’s pet project, the high-speed railway project between Jakarta and Bandung, West Java.

Jonan initially refused to issue the building permit for the company developing the railway, PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC), arguing that it had not submitted the required documents. Jonan even declined to attend the ground-breaking ceremony for the project in January this year.

In his speech to the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Jokowi did not mention Jonan by name but he had a stinging rebuke for his former minister. “If a decision has been taken in a Cabinet meeting, then ministers should be of one voice and give their full support. They must consistently implement the decision and should not take their own initiatives, especially on issues that I have issued presidential regulations,” he said.

Jokowi issued on Oct. 6, 2015 a presidential regulation to expedite the construction of the railway project.

Meanwhile, former administrative and bureaucratic reform minister Yuddy Chrisnandi was shown the door in all likelihood for some of the controversial decisions made during his brief tenure, including his decision to issue his ministry’s annual government institution performance review, which showed his ministry to be among the best-performing government institutions. The President ignored the finding and insisted that only he had the authority to judge the performance of ministers.

Many, however, questioned Jokowi’s decision to sack culture and education minister Anies Baswedan, whom analysts considered to be one of the most competent ministers in the Cabinet.

Political analyst Arya Fernandes from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said Anies has been used as a sacrificial lamb in the effort to meet the demands of political parties.“His ministry is in the top five, but he was removed. Jokowi needed to accommodate the demands of political parties and he needed to do that with the least amount of resistance,” Arya said.

Political observer Arie Sujito of Gadjah Mada University said that the latest Cabinet reshuffle would test Jokowi’s leadership skills even more.

“The heavier challenge is that the second reshuffle should deliver better results and introduce more policy breakthroughs,” Arie said.

Wiranto

https://upload.vstanced.com/images/2016/07/29/1SX.jpg

“An old soldier never stops fighting,” Wiranto once said. This sentence rings true as on Wednesday, the retired Army general, was appointed as coordinating political, legal and security affairs minister, replacing Luhut Pandjaitan.

Wiranto is known as a military figure with a high-flying, but extremely controversial, career. Born to a poor family in Yogyakarta on April 4, 1947, Wiranto graduated from the National Military Academy in 1968.

Twenty years later, he was appointed as a key aide to then president Soeharto from 1987 to 1991. This was a prestigious position during the New Order regime. Afterward, his career took off as he was picked to serve in many strategic positions in the military. Finally, he held the top position as the commander of the Indonesian Military (then ABRI, now TNI) from February 1998 to October 1999.

At the end of the New Order and the beginning of the reform era, the country underwent a transition from presidents Soeharto to Habibie. At that time, Wiranto served as the defense and security minister concurrent with his role as ABRI chief.

The reform era was a time of great turbulence in the country. Wiranto, as ABRI chief, was therefore implicated in kidnappings and other abuses conducted by the Army. He was also allegedly involved, at least indirectly, in human rights violations in the Trisakti and Semanggi I and II shootings of student activists in 1998.

During the presidency of Abdurrahman Wahid he was dismissed from his position as defense and security minister in 2000 amid allegations of human rights violations in East Timor.

Prosecutors say he played a key role in facilitating severe human rights abuses by the military during Indonesia’s violent withdrawal from East Timor (now Timor Leste) during which more than 2,000 Timorese died. However, he has repeatedly denied all charges against him.

UN and domestic groups have accused Wiranto of committing crimes against humanity. He was also included in the list of suspected war criminals and was prohibited from entering the US.

Despite his controversial history, however, he has sufficient charm and charisma to earn him a limited amount of electoral support. He has made several attempts to get into the State Palace, running in the 2004 presidential election, unsuccessfully, as Golkar’s candidate.

After that, he formed the Hanura Party with several retired Army generals and has served as the party’s chairman. In the 2009 presidential election, Wiranto ran for vice-president as Jusuf Kalla’s running mate.

In 2014, Wiranto tried to run for president again with running mate media tycoon Hary Tanoesoedibjo but failed to garner enough support from other political parties to nominate himself. Hanura later joined with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) to nominate then presidential candidate Joko “Jokowi” Widodo. His political efforts finally paid off, to a certain degree, on Wednesday when he was finally able to return to the Palace in his role as close aide of Jokowi, with his dark past presumably behind him.

Sri Mulyani

https://upload.vstanced.com/images/2016/07/29/1SY.jpg

New Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati is not only the most senior woman at the World Bank, she is, according to Forbes magazine, one of the world’s most powerful women. She is also a mother of three.

These facts speak louder than words about her qualities. The reform-minded “iron” lady, who calls herself “tough”, earned her reputation when leading the finance ministry from 2005 to 2010, during which she was known for instigating bureaucratic reforms, including at the deeply entrenched tax office by setting up a new code of ethics and set of sanctions.

Sri Mulyani opposed calls for the closure of the Indonesian Stock Exchange to halt a nosedive in shares of Bumi Resources, partly owned by politically-wired tycoon Aburizal Bakrie. She also imposed a travel ban on a number of coal-mining executives after a dispute over the companies’ reluctance to pay government fees.

Her efforts in pushing through reforms may have earned her enemies or yielded dislike in some parties. In 2010, she stepped down from her post amid a heated bailout scandal of Bank Century, in which she became the target of an opposition campaign accusing her and former vice president Boediono of abusing their authority during the Rp 6.7 trillion bailout. Sri Mulyani joined the World Bank in 2010. Prior to departing to Washington DC, in a public lecture at the RitzCarlton Hotel in Jakarta, she said in her speech: “I’ll be back.”

And back she is. Six years on, she will be faced with challenges that include a weak economy that has grown less than expected and complicated state revenue collection efforts at a time when Jokowi’s administration needs a hefty amount of funds to push through infrastructure projects.

At the World Bank Sri Mulyani was respected as someone whose understanding of clients’ needs shaped strategy for a better and bigger World Bank Group, said Jim Yong-kim, the Bank’s president. “I have personally come to rely on Sri Mulyani for her wise advice and insightful counsel, and I will greatly miss her voice on the Senior Management Team,” Jim wrote in an official farewell letter.

Archandra Tahar

http://tryimg.com/7/2016/07/29/45Gjs.jpg

While the condition of Indonesia’s oil and gas sector remains grim as a result of plunging energy prices, one long-time player may be able to spruce things up.

Boasting degrees in mechanical and marine engineering, 45-year-old Archandra Tahar, served as president of Houston-based offshore technologies and consulting company Petroneering before being summoned by Jokowi to take on the mantle of energy and mineral resources minister.

Archandra received access into Jokowi from his friend, PDI-P rising-star politician Darmawan Prasodjo -- a key member of Jokowi’s 2014 presidential campaign team.

Archandra has spent more than 20 years in the oil and gas sector, with stints as principal at Horson Wison Deepwater and as principal and president of the Asia Pacific department for AGR Deepwater Development System.

Furthermore, he holds several international patents in offshore fields.

Archandra’s background is expected to be reflected in his commitment to bringing in new technology in order to increase oil and gas production, and to ensure energy security in the future.

“Three things we hope to focus on in the energy and minerals sector is first, technology as the backbone, second, human resources and third, we must make the process more accountable,” he said after his inauguration ceremony. Oil and gas exploration in particular, has suffered under low commodity prices. Industry players await with bated breath the changes Archandra may bring with him. Executives of Pupuk Indonesia Energi (PIE), a subsidiary of state-owned fertilizer firm Pupuk Indonesia Holding Company (PIHC), for example, expect that the new energy minister could help reduce the high price of gas, which is the biggest expense of the fertilizer industry.

According to Petroengineering’s website, Archandra’s company has worked with state oil and gas firm Pertamina, BP and ExxonMobil.

Budi Karya Sumadi

http://tryimg.com/7/2016/07/29/45a7q.jpg

Spending his entire career as a professional, Budi Karya Sumadi has been brushing shoulders with Jokowi since the latter served as governor of Jakarta between 2012 and 2014.

Prior to his appointment as transportation minister, Budi, 59, served as president director of state airport operator Angkasa Pura (AP) II for a little more than a year.

He recently found himself in the media spotlight in regards to the high-profile expansion of Terminal 3 at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, the country’s largest and busiest airport. The operation of the terminal, initially slated to be launched in June, has been delayed after it failed to secure a greenlight from the then Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan due to a number of technical hurdles.

After securing his degree in architecture from Gadjah Mada University, also Jokowi’s alma mater, Budi started his career as an architect at the Jakarta-based construction firm Pembangunan Jaya in 1982.

Since then, he has dedicated himself to the property business for more than 25 years. He assumed the position of president director of publicly listed Pembangunan Jaya Ancol in 2004 and served in that position for nine years. Other companies where he has held board of director positions include Jaya Garden Polis, Jaya Real Property and Jaya Land.

One of his career highlights was in the Jakarta provincial administration-owned Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro), where he served as president director from 2013 to 2015. During his time in Jakpro, Budi supported Jokowi’s regreening and city park construction programs in Pluit Dam, North Jakarta, while the latter served as governor. Commenting on his new position, Budi said that his long experience as a professional would help his leadership at the Transportation Ministry.

“We are talking about technicalities, like those related to human resources and finance, which I’m already familiar with,” he said. He also revealed that the President had asked him to improve the country’s connectivity and manage transportation operators.

Enggartiasto Lukita

http://gambarku.net/images/2016/07/29/a1.jpg

Born 64 years ago in the West Java city of Cirebon, Enggartiasto “Enggar” Lukita is a property businessman and a veteran politician, having served in the Golkar Party for over three decades.

In 2013, Enggar jumped ship to the NasDem Party and has become a key member of the relatively young party. Following Jokowi’s inauguration as the country’s seventh president, Enggar was rumored to join Jokowi’s Cabinet as one of his economic ministers despite his alleged involvement in the 1999 Bank Indonesia liquidity support scandal.

Lawyer Petrus Selestinus, coordinator of the Indonesian Democracy Defense Team, accused Enggar in 2014 of receiving funds from Bank Bali graft convict and fugitive Djoko S. Tjandra. Petrus still to this day maintains Enggar received the funds, which he said were detailed in Djoko’s dossier.

“President Jokowi should review and reconsider Enggar. [The President] cannot be surrounded by people who are potentially involved in graft,” Petrus said. Others who were implicated in the case include former House of Representatives speaker Setya Novanto, now Golkar Party chairman, who was quickly acquitted of all charges.

Enggar has repeatedly denied the accusations and claims an audit by multinational service network PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) supports his position.

Despite the accusation, Enggar has remained untouched and has been a NasDem Party lawmaker since 2014. Enggar, who graduated from the English department at the Bandung Teacher Training Institute (now the Indonesian University of Education), has built up a successful real estate and property business. He started his career in the industry in 1977 as a staffer to a director at PT Bangun Tjipta Sarana, where just two years later he was promoted as the company’s head of personnel.

He continued to pursue his career in the company until he became president director in 1986. Enggar would continue his reign as president director in a number of companies, namely PT Supradinakarya Multijaya Group, PT Citrasari Inti, PT Kartika Karisma Indah and PT Kemang Pratama. In his capacity as Golkar politician, Enggar has served as lawmaker for four terms from 1997 to 2014, during which time he served on various commissions, including those overseeing defense, foreign affairs, agriculture, maritime affairs, forestry and transportation.

Airlangga Hartarto

http://gambarku.net/images/2016/07/29/a4.jpg

An engineer by training, Airlangga has successfully paved his way through Indonesian politics as a part of the Golkar Party, the country’s oldest and second-largest political party.

Airlangga, 53, is the son of Hartato Sastrosoenarto, who served as a minister for former president Soeharto for three consecutive terms, 15 years in total. His father, also an engineer, served as industry minister for two terms and then later became the coordinating production and distribution minister.

Airlangga was undertaking his third consecutive term as a Golkar Party legislator before his appointment as Industry Minister. Earlier this year, it was thought by many that the father of eight would run as a candidate for the party’s chairmanship. Ultimately, the chairmanship was won by former speaker of the House of Representatives, Setya Novanto.

In his second term as a legislator in the 2009-2014 period, Airlangga chaired House Commission VI overseeing industry, trade, investment and state-owned enterprises. During his tenure, he introduced the 2014 Industry Law.
Airlangga received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Gadjah Mada University in 1987. Although he failed to complete his master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania, Airlangga later went on to receive two master’s degrees from Monash University and Melbourne University.

Airlangga is the first and currently only Golkar Party representative in Jokowi’s Cabinet. House Speaker Ade Komaruddin, a Golkar Party member, said Airlangga was “the right man for the job”.

Once upon a time in old Java there was a village. Pening was its name. Pening was a prosperous village. The land was fertile and the weather was always good all year round. It was on the slope of Mount Merbabu so the climate was cool. People made their living by cultivating rice, vegetables and fruits. The harvest was always satisfying. So all of them lived a happy life. That’s why once a year they held a ceremony called ‘Bersih desa’. It was a kind of thanks giving day. It was a day when they express their thankfulness to God for a successful harvest. They would clean their village and then they would pray together. At night they would have a dinner together and held teater performances.

One day after a succesful harvest they would celebrate it. That time they wanted something special. They wanted more meat for dinner. So they went hunting in a wood. Just outside of the village there was a wood where there were many animals like deer, buffalo, mouse deer, lamb and many other. But that day there was no animal at all. Animals were nowhere to be seen. They had searched every inch of the wood but still their effort were in vain. When it was almost dark, they were very tired so they took a rest. They sat on something that look like a rock and a big root. Everybody was silent because they were exhausted and disappointed.

Then suddenly someone chopped the big root with his sword to relief his disappointment. Amazingly there was blood coming out of the root. They were surprised. Someone tried to chop it deeper. He found meat ! So they chopped more and more. After their bags were full of meat they were satisfied. Then they went home happily.

That night the people of Pening were preparing a big dinner. They wanted a special dinner with the meat they got from the wood. Just as they were preparing dinner, a boy came to the village. He looked poor. He begged food to some people. But they refused. Someone said :

‘We are preparing dinner. You may come to our dinner tonight. But not now’.
‘But I am very hungry, please’.

‘Just come here tonight’.

But then there was an old widow who took care of him. She was just a poor widow. She gave him food and shelter.

‘You may take a rest here. Join us tonight for dinner’.
‘Thank you very much. You are very kind to me. You are the only one who helped me. That’s why I will save you. Tonight there will be a great event here’.

‘Yes, there will be a great party’.
‘No, I mean something special’
‘What do you mean?’
‘I cannot say now. But listen to me. Prepare a boat for you’
‘Why? What will happen?’
‘Just do as I say’
‘Please tell me what will happen?’
‘OK, you are very kind to me so I will tell you but please promise me you won’t tell anyone’.
‘OK, I promise’

‘I am Naga Baru Klinting. I am a dragon. I was meditating in the slope of Mount Merbabu when your people hurt me. They hurt me by chopping my body. Now they are preparing dinner with meat from my body. So I will take my revenge tonight, but I will save you. Prepare a boat for you’.
‘Oh, please don’t do that. Forgive my people’
‘Whatever will be , will be. Good bye’.

Then the boy left. Just before the dinner began at the village hall some boys were playing in the yard. Suddenly a boy came to them.
‘Hi guys a have a game for you’
Then he held a small bamboo and attached it to the ground.
‘If you can pull it, I will give you a special present’
‘Oh, that’s very easy’, a boy said.

He tried to pull it but it was very strong so he could not pull it. Another boy tried but he also failed. Everybody failed. Then this game drew adult’s attention. One by one they tried to pull but all of them could not make it. When many people gathered then the boy said.

‘O people of Pening. I am Naga Baru Klinting. I am a dragon. I was meditating in the slope of mount Merbabu when you chopped me. Now I will take my revenge. Enjoy your party’.

Then he pulled the bamboo. Amazingly, water poured from the ground. The water immediately flooded the village. Finally the whole village sank under water. They were all drowned and died in the lake. There was only one survivor. The poor old widow. She had prepared a simple boat so she could survive. Since then on the lake is called Rawa Pening. Rawa means lake in Javanese and Indonesian language. Today the lake is located in the province of central Java, Indonesia.

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Six suspected militants with links to the Islamic State group were arrested by Indonesian police on Friday while allegedly plotting a rocket attack on Singapore, authorities in Indonesia and Singapore said.

Singapore said it was stepping up security in response to the plan being hatched on nearby Batam island, which is only about 15 km (10 miles) to the south of the wealthy city-state.

Indonesian police spokesman Agus Rianto told reporters the six had been plotting with a member of Islamic State in Syria to attack Singapore, a major commercial, banking and travel hub that is home to many Western expatriates.

"What we understand so far is that they were planning to attack vital objects, busy areas including police offices," Rianto said.

Indonesian authorities did not give details of the alleged plot, and it was not clear if those arrested had the capacity to carry out an attack.

Asked whether police had recovered any physical evidence of preparations for a rocket attack, Rianto said "not yet".

In Singapore, an elite police unit patrolled the glittering downtown waterfront in vehicles and on foot on Friday afternoon. One officer said they were on routine patrol.

ISLAMIC STATE LINK

The six arrested on Batam were suspected of having links to Bahrun Naim, an Indonesian fighting with Islamic State in Syria, police said.

Indonesian investigators believe that Naim was one of the masterminds behind an attack in January in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, in which eight people were killed including the four attackers.

"There's a link to Bahrun Naim because there was communication with Bahrun Naim - but whether they were affiliated with Bahrun Naim's group or not - this is what we're investigating now," Rianto said.

The Batam Pos newspaper quoted police as saying the six suspects were mostly factory workers aged between 19 and 46.

Batam is linked to Singapore by frequent ferries and its beach resorts and golf courses are a popular weekend getaway destination for Singaporeans, who are preparing to celebrate their National Day holiday on Tuesday.

Singapore said it is not surprised by the arrests.

"We were aware of the plans being made to attack us with rockets," Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam said in a statement.

He did not elaborate on what type of rockets the plotters planned to use or what evidence had been uncovered.

"The attacks can come from terrorists who seek to come into Singapore; and they can come from terrorists who locate themselves just outside Singapore. Our small size increases these risks," he said.

Multi-ethnic Singapore has never seen a successful attack by Islamist militants, though authorities did break up a plot to bomb several embassies soon after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, while jailed Singaporean militant Mas Selamat Kastari was accused of plotting to crash a hijacked plane into the city-state's Changi Airport in 2002.

SOCIAL MEDIA NETWORK

National police spokesman Martinus Sitompul said police and an anti-terrorist unit were in the early stages of their investigation.

Authorities in Indonesia and neighbouring Malaysia say dozens of men have gone from those countries to join IS in the Middle East, while Singapore has detained several people suspected of supporting the group.

Security officials fear that Naim and other Islamic State leaders were now asking supporters in Indonesia and other countries to launch attacks at home, instead of being drawn to the fight in the Middle East.

Southeast Asian militants fighting for Islamic State in the Middle East have said they have chosen one of the most wanted men in the Philippines to head a regional faction of the radical group, security officials said last month.

Jakarta-based security analyst Sidney Jones said it would be a departure for Naim and his supporters if they were thinking of attacking targets outside Indonesia.

"One thing I think is clear is Bahrun Naim has been able to establish a lot of communication with a lot of people through his social media network," Jones said.

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said this week that the financial centre was a target for IS as they saw it as "a rational, open, cosmopolitan country", even though it was not involved in the U.S.-led campaign against the group in the Middle East.

"So do not think that by lying low, we are not going to be a target," Lee told reporters while on a visit to the United States, the Straits Times newspaper reported.

Last Saturday’s violent mob attacks on a number of Buddhist temples in Tanjung Balai, North Sumatra were supposedly sparked by an Indonesian woman of Chinese descent complaining about the volume of the loudspeakers at a mosque near her house.

The issue of loudspeaker volume at mosques in Indonesia is obviously a sensitive one. One of the few high level politicians who has consistently brought up the topic is Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who in the past has formed a team to help tackle the issue.

In the wake of the temple attacks in Tanjung Balai, Kalla, who is the head of the Dewan Masjid Indonesia (Indonesian Mosque Council), has called on mosques to be considerate about both the volume and length of their loudspeaker use in order to protect interfaith harmony and peace.

Speaking yesterday at a seminar on the role of mosques in fighting radicalism, Kalla noted that Indonesia is the country with the most mosques in the world (around 800,000) and that the volume of the loudspeakers sometimes led to conflict even between nearby mosques.

"Sometimes the calls to prayer are conflicting with each other because there are so many mosques. We are grateful for that, but of course we must also be careful," he said as quoted by Republika

The vice president also said that mosque caretakers often set the recording of sermons and Quran recitals to run for up to 30 minutes before the call to prayer, which was unnecessary as most people coming to the mosque did not have to travel far, adding that 5 minutes should be enough time to assemble worshippers.

In the past Kalla has also spoken out against the need to create loud noises to wake people up for sahur (the pre-dawn meal) during Ramadan.

An Indonesian city has hit on an idea to rid its beaches of crocodiles – it will offer cash prizes to people who catch the man-eating reptiles, an official said on Friday.

The population of dangerous saltwater crocodiles around two beaches near Kupang in eastern Indonesia has been increasing in recent years and there have been reports of tourists being attacked.

Authorities now plan to launch a competition offering cash prizes of 5mn rupiah ($380) to animal experts for each of the reptiles caught alive, said local tourism chief Marius Ardu Jelamu.

“We have warned visitors to be careful when visiting the beaches but it’s not enough, we must do something,” Jelamu told AFP. “Some of these animals are 3m to 4m (10’ to 13’) long, this is very scary.”

Jelamu said the scheme was aimed at those experienced in dealing with crocodiles – not the public – and the animals would likely be caught using tranquilliser guns and ropes.

After being captured, the crocodiles – which are a protected species under Indonesian law, so cannot be killed – would be released back into the wild far from the beaches.

Participants will compete in teams and the scheme is set to begin in the near future, said Jelamu.

However the local wildlife agency expressed concerns that the contest could be dangerous for participants, with agency chief Maman Surahman saying that crocodiles were “scary creatures” for humans.

Saltwater crocodiles are the largest crocodile species reaching up to 7m in length, and are known as formidable predators.

The huge Indonesian archipelago is home to a vast array of exotic wildlife, including a number of species of crocodile.
Crocodiles in Indonesia regularly attack and kill humans.

In April a Russian tourist was mauled to death by a crocodile in the Raja Ampat islands, a popular diving site in the east of the archipelago.

Ethnic-Chinese Indonesians in Medan, North Sumatra, celebrated the “hungry ghost” festival over the weekend. According to Chinese tradition, the seventh month in the Chinese lunar calendar is the time when the gates of hell open, allowing ghosts and spirits to visit earth. Food and other offerings are made to keep the spirits of dead ancestors happy.

40239

Buddhists and Taoists, perform rituals to honor the dead and absolve their suffering. To start the celebration, Indonesian-Chinese descents in Medan prepared offerings, such as mustard leaves and red cane.

40240

The offerings were prepared in front of this temple in Medan on Aug. 10. The two men pictured here carry an effigy of the “King of Ghost,” ahead of the celebrations.

40241

Aside from offerings, believers also burn “hell money” – fake money that they have prepared to appease the wandering spirits.

40242

In the image above, taken in a temple in Medan on Aug. 10, people throw the fake money in the air before lighting it on fire.

40243

People also make paper replicas of various items, such as televisions and cars, to be burnt to honor their ancestors’ spirits. In this picture, fire spreads through a temple complex in Medan, where piles of fake money and other paper replicas were displayed on Aug. 10.

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Government of Indonesia is banning all civil servants from playing GPS-based games, such as Pokemon Go, as the mobile-based game is considered a threat to national security.

The Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Yuddy Chrisnandi stated here in an official letter on Thursday that all civil servants are banned to play the augmented reality game around government institution buildings "as a form of national vigilance and to prevent the possible vulnerability of government installations and security."

Moreover, the game may also affect the productivity and the discipline of civil servants while on duty, he said.

"We are doing a preventive measure to maintain national security. We should not endanger national stability for any small risk," Chrisnandi said.

The high-tech features of the game are making government officials afraid as they can be used for spying activities.

Indonesians have been joining the frenzy of Pokemon Go, since its launch two weeks ago.

The growing popularity of Pokemon Go, which was developed for iOS and Android devices, makes use of GPS and the camera of compatible devices.

The game allows players to capture, battle, and train virtual creatures called Pokemons, such as a cuddly yellow Pikachu, who appears on device screens as though in the real world.

However, during a couple of weeks of it becoming a worldwide hit, the game has already been blamed for a wave of crimes, traffic violations and complaints in cities around the globe.

Media reports indicated that the game was used by four teens in Missouri to lure nearly a dozen of their victims into armed robberies.

Meanwhile, social media is also buzzing with reports of players, who have suffered minor injuries from tripping and falling while staying glued to their cell phones looking for Pokemons.

Indonesia sank dozens of impounded foreign boats to mark Independence Day, an official said on Wednesday, as President Joko Widodo steps up a campaign to stop foreign fishermen from "stealing" in its waters.

Since elected, President Joko Widodo has intensified a campaign to exercise Indonesia's maritime sovereignty and has sunk and blown up scores of foreign vessels.

"Today we offer 60 boats to be scuttled in eight locations," fisheries ministry official, Mas Achmad Santosa, said.

"This is a gift (for Indonesia) and goes to show our consistency in enforcing the law," Santosa added.

But unlike past boat-sinking events, which were broadcasted on national television, Wednesday's ceremony was markedly toned down, with officials barring media coverage.

Officials have also refused to disclose the vessels' countries of origin.
Previously, Indonesia has scuppered boats from countries including China, Vietnam and Philippines, with Beijing particularly angered by the gesture.

Tension between Jakarta and Beijing has escalated in recent months as Chinese fishing boats have clashed with Indonesian government vessels, prompting Widodo to visit the Natunas islands on a warship in June.

On Tuesday, he pledged to defend "every inch" of Indonesia's land and maritime territory in a state-of-the-nation address.

Unlike several of its Southeast Asian neighbours, Indonesia has long maintained it has no maritime disputes with China in the South China Sea and does not contest ownership of any territory there.

But Beijing's claims overlap Indonesia's exclusive economic zone - waters where a state has the right to exploit resources - around the Natunas.

Indonesian plantation company Sampoerna Agro is considering how to respond to a recent court ruling that handed down the country's largest ever fine to a company linked to forest fires, a company official said on Monday.

"We're still studying this," Sampoerna Agro spokesman Michael Kesuma told Reuters when asked whether the company would appeal the decision.

Kesuma referred to a Jakarta court ruling on August 11 that found Sampoerna unit PT National Sago Prima negligent in relation to fires on 3,000 hectares of its concessions in Riau in 2014, and handed down fines totaling 1.07 trillion rupiah ($81.62 million).

According to a spokesman at Indonesia's environment ministry, the fine is the biggest ever to be handed down to a company linked to fires.

Five other lawsuits are currently being pursued by the government against companies linked to forest fires, environment ministry spokesman Novrizal said in a written statement.

An intensification of law enforcement by Indonesia could help deter companies and individuals from using fire to clear land.

Last year PT Kalista Alam was fined 366 billion rupiah in relation to fires in Aceh province.

Indonesia's efforts to penalize companies allegedly responsible for its annual forest fires suffered a setback in late 2015 when a judge rejected a $565 million lawsuit against a pulp and paper firm, PT Bumi Mekar Hijau.

Fires in Indonesia, often set in the dry season by companies clearing land for plantations, cause an annual "haze" crisis that blankets large parts of the region in choking smog.

Home to the world's third-largest area of tropical forests, Indonesia has been criticized by green activists and by neighboring Southeast Asian nations for failing to stop the annual haze.

The heavy smoke from slash-and-burn clearing often comes from the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan, where large forest concessions are used by pulp and paper and palm oil companies, some of which are listed in Singapore.

Singapore said in June it was planning to prosecute Indonesian polluters in Singapore courts under the Transboundary Haze Pollution Act.

The news that angry mobs attacked several Buddhist Temples in Tanjung Balai, North Sumatra, last Saturday was certainly seen by many as a depressing sign of Indonesia’s growing religious intolerance. The mobs, supposedly angered after news about a local woman of Chinese descendent complaining about a mosque’s loudspeaker went viral on social media, went on to burn, damage and loot a number of temples.

The mob violence has been roundly condemned, with President Joko Widodo having ordered law enforcers to take firm action against the attackers. Police have already arrested at least 12 in connection with the incidents and things appear to be calm in Tanjung Balai once again.

Despite all that, the fact that such an incident could occur at all seems to fit a pattern of growing religious intolerance and ethnic tension in Indonesia, one which is especially sad considering how many of the country’s basic principles are about respecting other cultures and creating unity through diversity.

Which is why we were so happy to see these videos of Muslim students in Tanjung Balai coming together to help rebuild and fix the damage at the temples caused by the mobs. They were posted yesterday on Facebook and quickly went viral, having been shared well over 10,000 times already.

We know how easy it is to get depressed thinking about the rising religious intolerance in Indonesia. But let’s never forget, the vast majority of Indonesians truly do believe in unity in diversity and helping out their neighbors, no matter what their beliefs. These young people represent the real Indonesia, the country we love.
