Police seek woman in connection with death of tourist in Chiang Mai

Police are on the lookout for a woman in Chiang Mai accused of drugging and robbing tourists after one of two victims was found dead.

Police deputy chief Pol Colonel Piyaphan Phattarapongsin said Indian tourist Tariq Ahmad Bhat was found dead in a Chiang Mai hotel room after checking in with the Thai woman.

The next night US tourist Gene Ber Ulfgang, 69, was found unconscious in another hotel and spent two days in hospital before recovering.

He told police he invited the woman back to his hotel and he passed out after the woman ordered him a cup of coffee.

A used coffee cup was also found at the scene in the first case.

Ulfgang said he was robbed of US$5,000 and his credit card which was later used to buy a diamond ring worth about THB1 million.

Police said the woman also tried to buy the same ring a day earlier with a stolen card obtained from the first victim but on that occasion it failed to be authorised by the bank.

Piyaphan said police are certain that the same woman perpetrated both robberies and urged tourists to be on their guard and not accept drinks.

The woman was described as 'pretty and short-haired.'
