I work in the coffee shop, doing western food. Here in singapore, to employ a malaysian worker at times they will need to sign a one year contract. First mth and second mth company will hold on to $500/mth as a deposit incase they break the one year contract, the employee will have to bare the costs of overhead fees bare by the employers.

Common practise in singpore when the malaysian tender their resignation, company has the right to withhold their last pay salary. Reason for doing it is becos company will then request iras to submit any outstanding payments or taxes owing from the leaving staff. Once iras reponsed with zero owing or outstanding, company will release the final salary within 2 to 3 weeks.

Does malaysia have such practise too?

my understanding is that for Malaysia, taxes is estimated and deducted from monthly salary.. end of the year after your declaration , the government may refund excess or tax you more ..
