‘Pedestrians better train in parkour first before crossing this zebra cross’ in JKT

Most Indonesian cities are notoriously unfriendly towards pedestrians, none more so than the capital of Jakarta. Seeing sidewalks overridden with kaki lima (food carts) and motorcycles (either parked or using them as a shortcut) is a common occurrence but that’s on top of basic design flaws like an overall lack of sidewalks and crosswalks.

And on top of the design flaws, there are the design fails like this:

This photo, showing a zebra cross outside of the Tamini Square shopping center in Makasar, East Jakarta, was posted by Koalisi Pejalan Kaki (Pedestrian Coalition), a group that advocates for pedestrian rights in Indonesia.

Their sarcastic caption says, “Pedestrians better train in parkour first before crossing this zebra cross.”

This design fail is clearly more than just an annoyance for pedestrians. Reporting on the viral photo, Kompas interviewed several local residents who noted that the failure to leave an opening in the fence to accommodate the zebra cross made it significantly more dangerous as pedestrians had to enter the street from an area where angkot minibuses are often parked and where it was more difficult to see incoming traffic.

Seeing design flaws that are due to a lack of funds is one thing, but in this case the government actually wasted money on an unnecessary segment of barrier that seems to exist only to make life harder and more dangerous for pedestrians.

This one certainly goes up there in the Indonesian sidewalk hall of shame (alongside those cities that have tactile guiding blocks for the blind that lead them directly into trees or, in case, a canal). With such carelessness on the part of the government, it’s no wonder that Indonesian are among the least active walkers in the world (according to one study).

Indonesia hikes rates again to defend its currency, but analysts see further weakness

Indonesia's central bank has made another attempt to curb further sell-off in the rupiah, but analysts said the currency would remain under pressure in the coming months against the backdrop of rising U.S. Treasury yields and an escalation in global trade tensions .

In a widely expected move, Bank Indonesia on Thursday raised its benchmark policy rate by 25 basis points to 5.75 percent. The latest move took the country's total interest rate hikes this year to 1.50 percentage points. The central bank in Southeast Asia's largest economy has been one of the most hawkish in the region.

The rupiah strengthened slightly against the greenback on Friday, with one U.S. dollar buying around 14,890 rupiah compared to 14,912 rupiah the previous day. So far this year, the currency has depreciated by more than 8 percent against the U.S. dollar — one of the worst hit currencies as investors flee emerging markets deemed vulnerable in the current climate.

"Our move, as we conveyed yesterday, basically is to strengthen our external resilience and to strengthen the stability of our economy, especially the rupiah," Perry Warjiyo, governor of Bank Indonesia, told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Friday.

Warjiyo added that defending the rupiah is critical to contain the country's current account deficit — a measure of the flow of goods, services and investments in and out of the country. A further weakening in the rupiah makes it more expensive for Indonesia to finance that deficit — a reason widely cited by many investors for taking their money out of the country.

In addition to raising interest rates, Bank Indonesia has been tapping its foreign exchange reserves to buy up the rupiah. Those foreign cash reserves have slipped to $117.9 billion in August, the lowest level since January 2017.

But Warjiyo said the reserves remain "ample" to defend the currency again, if needed.

Some analysts said the downward pressure on the rupiah is not over and the central bank will have to raise interest rates again the coming months.

"We think a combination of rising US Treasury yields and an intensification of the trade war between the US and China will keep the rupiah under pressure. We are expecting two more rate hikes before the end of the year," Gareth Leather, senior Asia economist at Capital Economics, wrote in a Thursday note.

Higher Treasury yields make the U.S. a more attractive investment destination compared to Indonesia, and the Southeast Asian country's exports could be hurt if global trade slows down as a result of tariff tensions between the U.S. and China.

Indonesia Decision Guide: Is This the End of Rate-Hike Cycle?

Indonesia’s central bank, one of Asia’s biggest interest-rate hikers last year, is widely expected to leave policy unchanged on Thursday, with analysts paring back calls for further increases in 2019.

All 26 economists surveyed by Bloomberg predict Governor Perry Warjiyo and his board will keep the seven-day reverse repurchase rate at 6 percent for a second month, after hiking six times by a total of 175 basis points since May.

Bank Indonesia is getting a breather from a more cautious U.S. Federal Reserve, the currency’s rebound from a two-decade low, and a slowdown in the global economy. Warjiyo himself signaled policy makers are close to the end of the tightening cycle, telling lawmakers on Wednesday that the benchmark rate had almost reached its peak.

Mohamed Faiz Nagutha, an economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Singapore, said it “almost certainly” seems as though it’s the end of Indonesia’s tightening cycle. He no longer sees Bank Indonesia hiking rates this year, and said it could start easing in the second half of 2019.

“We are not penciling in rate cuts yet and await further signals from policy makers on the policy objectives going forward,” he said.

After being hit by an emerging-market rout last year, the rupiah has gained about 3 percent against the dollar in the past month, while investors have pumped almost $600 million into government bonds since the start of January.

Here’s what to watch for in the statement:

Rupiah Rebound

The central bank took an aggressive stance last year on rate hikes to help stabilize the rupiah after it dropped almost 6 percent against the dollar to reach its lowest level in 20 years. With the currency on a firmer footing in 2019 -- due in part to the market scaling back bets of Fed tightening and the BI’s proactive stance -- policy makers can afford to ease up on hikes.

Fed Future

Key to the rupiah’s outlook is the Fed. Since taking office in May, Warjiyo has vowed to be pre-emptive on rates as he sought to keep pace with the Fed and counter the emerging-market sell-off. With U.S. central bank officials indicating they’re now less inclined to keep raising rates given mounting global risks, Indonesian policy makers can also take more of a wait-and-see approach.

“Much has changed since December 2018 with markets now thinking the Fed has turned over a new leaf to show that they’ll be more dovish in 2019,” said Nicholas Mapa, an economist at ING Bank NV in Manila.

Domestic Outlook

The inflation outlook remains benign for now: consumer prices rose 3.1 percent in December from a year ago, well within the central bank’s target band of 2.5 to 4.5 percent.

Still, the current account deficit which exacerbated last year’s outflows remains a key concern. While the central bank sees the gap easing to 2.5 percent of gross domestic product in 2019, after probably reaching 3 percent last year, data Tuesday showing Indonesia posted a record trade deficit in 2018 underscores the challenge that’s facing policy makers.

An upcoming presidential election also looms as a complicating factor. President Joko Widodo is keen to spur economic growth and keep a lid on cost-of-living pressures. The economy’s expansion of about 5 percent is still short of the 7 percent target Widodo set when he came to office in 2014.

At its last policy rate meeting in December, Bank Indonesia said the domestic economy was forecast to expand 5 percent to 5.4 percent this year.

WHAT OUR ECONOMISTS SAY...

“The central bank in December appeared more inclined to lean on direct intervention in the currency market to address any seasonal year-end volatility, rather than tighten further. In a Goldilocks scenario where the U.S. and China work out a resolution to their trade war, Bank Indonesia may start to unwind some of its rate hikes before year-end.”

Venomous Scorpion spotted crawling on overhead bin on Lion Air flight to Jakarta

This is basically Indonesia’s real-life answer to Snakes on a Plane, but with a scorpion instead of a seemingly infinite number of snakes and without the over-the-top profanity of Samuel L. Jackson.

A photo showing a large scorpion crawling on an overhead bin on Lion Air flight JT-239 from the Riau capital of Pekanbaru to Jakarta yesterday has gone viral online, raising one important question again and again: How, Lion Air?

The flight departed Sultan Syarif Kasim II International Airport in Pekanbaru at 5 pm and was scheduled to land in Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport at 7 pm. One passenger named Karim Taslin told Detik that the scorpion crawled out onto the overhead bin above his row after the aircraft had already landed and as passengers were collecting their cabin luggage.

“I was sitting in row 19 along with 2 other passengers, an elderly couple. Seeing the scorpion right above us, we got out from out seats and hurried to stay away,” Karim said today, adding that he took photos of the venomous insect.

“I pressed the emergency button, but got no response so I shouted for help,” he said.

Karim said chaos then ensued in the cabin, preventing Lion Air officials from quickly getting to the scorpion. Before they reached row 19, the scorpion had already crawled back into the overhead bin and has not been seen since.

Hopefully someone has managed to capture the elusive arachnid before it terrorizes passengers on the next flights.

We have reached out to Lion Air and will update this story if we get a response.

Curiously, this is not an isolated incident of an animal (besides humans) roaming free on an Indonesian plane. In 2016, passengers aboard a Garuda Indonesia flight from the Papua capital of Jayapura to Jakarta were treated to a slithery shock when they saw what appeared to be a snake crawling around the plane’s cabin. Garuda later said the reptile was captured and it turned out it was actually a lizard that had escaped from a non-regulatory cage that was being transported in the plane’s cargo.

Update: In an official statement today, Lion Air said the insect in the viral photo “resembles a spider”, not a scorpion. They said they had performed pest control on the aircraft a week before the flight but offered no explanation as to how the animal got on board, only that an “intensive investigation” is being carried out.

Furthermore, Lion Air said they haven’t been able to capture the insect, regardless of what it may actually be.
