The operator was very kind and helpful and explained me that, as a tourist, to register and use the new SIM cards I will buy once in Batam, I will not have to provide temporary stay permit (KITAS) or permanent stay permit (KITAP) numbers, but just my passport will be enough.

However, the small shops who sell SIM cards will not be able to do that procedure, and I will have to go to a Telkomsel GraPARI point of attention.
There is one at Batam Center, open Mon-Fri whole day and Sat morning, and one at NAGOYA HILL open also on Sunday till 9pm
So, it seems I will be able to buy and use my new SIM card on the same day I arrive (a Sunday).

Alternatively, the same operator suggested me to ask a "friend" in Batam to register the SIM card on his/her name. He also hinted that maybe small shops may sell SIM cards which have been already registered but of course he was not advising me to do that.

A little correction here,what i meant as tourist cannot register a Indo sim card on their own means the option of registering isnt available online if he/she isnt physically in Indo-land. Tourist/s need to bring their passport to the Telkomsel service center (for my case), beside Jco at Nagoya hill mall to register. So if anyone still have a valid sim card that has already been blocked, do not throw them away as yet. You may still be able to "save" for later-registration.

The queue in Telkomsel service center at Nagoya Hill Mall...very long,hehehe...my friend tells me,took about 1.5 hour on weekdays. And i am going there to queue up soon.

Asking a local friend/s to help register on behalf is an option which i took (not under my passport; and i have 2 sim cards), BUT do note each local citizen can only register up to 3 indo sim card. Do note.

Do you know if there any grace period after buying a new SIM card, to be able to use it immediately before doing this registration?
If the grace period is 1 week, it still may work for me.
Otherwise, on my arrival to Formosa on Sunday afternoon, besides setting everything, I also have to plan one hour queuing just to have the SIM card usable??

I checked the service opening times on the Telkomsel web site for all three locations in Batam, and Nagoya Hill is the only one which is not only near, but also open till late (9pm) and also full day on Sunday.

Is it confirmed that the waiting time is so long as Nono reported?? 1.5 hours??
I am so pissed off!
So, now I must plan for at least one if not two hours wasted, after buying the SIM cards, to go to the GraPARI at NH and register them??
And, since I return to Batam not earlier than after 3-4 months, most usually, now I have to REPEAT this ordeal EVERY TIME I go to Batam, because my SIM card totally expired already??

I have not tried it before,but according to what i read online,i think a tourist may still be able to buy an indo sim card (w/o the initial registration) BUT it would last about 2 weeks before the sim card is forfeited. For those who has already got a sim card and got blocked,they can unblock it by end of April 2018.

Thats what i read. I will be making more enquiry upon reaching Harbour Bay.

According to a friend,that was a weekday that cost him about 1.5 hour of waiting time.

Having 1-2 weeks of grace period before blocking would be PERFECT for me. The SIM card expires anyway before I come back. Every time I must buy a new one.
Unfortunately, the Support Line did not mention that to me.
If you can ask around, when you reach Batam, and tell us back, it would be simply GREAT.

Why do we need to get SIM card over there. Now, Starhub, Singtel has package which allow you to do data roaming, valid for a month and cost you only $15. The package itself valid for many countries. I just bought one from Starhub, cost me $15, allowed you to use up to 2Gig. I used it in Jakarta, Malaysia and Taiwan. Trouble free.
