5 most popular destinations in Indonesia for holidaymakers

It seems like everyone is enjoying the chance to celebrate a long holiday in their favourite destination by taking advantage of two public holidays that appear before the weekend.

According to Agoda, here are the top-five favourite destinations in Indonesia based on last-minute bookings its users recently made for this long weekend.

1. Bali

It’s not hard to understand why Bali never fails to charm us. Not only rich in culture, this island is also blessed with beautiful landscapes and an exciting lifestyle.

There are a lot of attractions that are offered on the island, from stunning beaches, fantastic party life and leisure activities, to amazing marine life and much more. With 28.6 percent of total visits, there is no doubt that Bali will get busy this weekend.

If you’re heading there, mind to check our tips to maximally enjoy your long weekend holiday.

2. Jakarta

Spending the long weekend in Jakarta can be very exciting as there will be a lot of events that are happening this weekend. From jewellery exhibitions, film screenings and a literary festival, you will spend most of your free time hopping from one event to another, while enjoying less crowded roads since most Jakartans choose to get away from the city.

3. Bandung

Bandung has a lot to offer. Famously called the Paris of Java, Bandung offers a unique experience of urban life in a city that is surrounded by a stunning mountainous landscape. This city attracts a large number of visitors every weekend, especially from Jakarta, and is also known for its exciting college life.

It is visited mostly because its cooler air, delicious culinary treats and elegant Dutch architecture, which has been given new life by enthusiastic restaurateurs.

4. Yogyakarta

If you want to learn more about Indonesia’s royal life, you should make a visit to Yogyakarta. This city is known for its slow-paced life, rich culture and delicious traditional Javanese food that offers a soulful experience unlike anything you’ve had before.

Visitors going to Yogyakarta mostly head to the sultan’s palace, which is known as the keraton, or pay homage to Indonesia’s most majestic temples, which are Borobudur and Prambanan.

5. Batam Island

Batam Island is mostly known as a transit destination for visitors heading to the neighbouring country Singapore, or a favourite place for Singaporeans for a weekend getaway.

A melting pot that maintains a unique culture and fantastic seafood, visitors going to Batam Island mostly come to play golf or are attracted by discounted prices for electronics and duty-free shopping centers since this island is a free-trade zone.

City Administration Evicting Dadap Red-Light District

City Administration Evicting Dadap Red-Light District

Residents of Dadap in Tangerang regency, Banten, have appointed lawyers from the Jakarta Legal Aid Foundation ( LBH Jakarta ) to represent them in possible legal battles against the local administration following their forcible eviction on Tuesday.

Like Kalijodo in North Jakarta, an area earlier demolished by the Jakarta administration, Dadap is also known as a red-light district. Many sex workers from Kalijodo reportedly moved to Dadap after Kalijodo’s closure.

“Yes, we will accompany the residents of Dadap. We will try to find an out-of-court solution such as that suggested by the National Commission on Human Rights,” said LBH Jakarta lawyer Tigor Hutapea as reported by kompas.com on Thursday.

LBH Jakarta may take legal action against the local government if the residents wish to do so. Tigor said he would discuss the matter with the residents.

The residents of Dadap have argued that the eviction will not only affect those operating in the red-light district, but also those living in regular residential areas. Tangerang Regent Ahmed Zaki Iskandar, however, has promised not to evict residents living in Dadap’s standard residential areas.

The residents are disappointed because Ahmed has been reluctant to meet with them to discuss the eviction plan. “We visited the regent’s office in early May. The regent promised to meet with us. But we cannot meet with the regent. We only met the secretary,” said Aldy, chairman of a local youth forum.

Armed with various sharp weapons, Dadap residents clashed with security officers on Tuesday when the local government tried to evict them from the area. The clashes occurred in the morning and took place again in the afternoon.

They threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at security officers, who escorted the workers demolishing the properties in the area. In response, the security officers shot tear gas to disperse the crowd, made up of hundreds of people. ( bbn )

Bros: beware coutnerfeit /fake alcohol in Indonesia

Experience this in China, but seems to be a big problem in Indo due to high liquor taxes. Many cases of people going blind, organ failure, and death due to this phenomenon.

To be safe:
- Only buy from trusted stores/clubs with good repuataions. Never buy from street vendors
- Inspect the bottle carefully. Check the labels for air bubles, signs of re-use, tapered corks or lids
- If you are afraid, stick to beers, instead of spirits, whiskey's wines, as beers are lower profit and don't use methanol

Nigerian citizen gets 20 years in narcotic drugs case

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A Nigerian citizen has been sentenced to 20 years in jail and fined Rp1.2 billion for facilitating narcotic drug distribution.

"Arinze was proven to have conspired to commit an evil act by becoming a facilitator in the distribution of Category I narcotic drug," chief judge of the West Jakarta district court, Bambang Mursito, said while reading out the verdict here on Wednesday.

In view of that, the panel of judges that had considered all the facts disclosed during the sessions, sentenced him to 20 years in jail and imposed a fine of Rp1.2 billion. If he fails to pay the fiine, he will have to serve six months more in jail.

Upon hearing the verdict, the state prosecutor, Nugraha, said he was yet to make up his mind whether to accept it or not. The prosecutor had asked for a death sentence.

Through his lawyer, Arinze Petrus Eneh said he was satisfied with the judges decision but said he, too, has to decide whether to appeal.

"In principle, we are satisfied with the verdict. However, we would think and consider about appealing it," the lawyer, Dolfie Rompas, said.

Arinze alias Zona, along with Tuti Sudartika alias Dede Rosa and Rojali Pajar Saputra (the two were tried under different dossiers), were involved in a case of illegal possession of 6.3 kilograms of methamphetamine.

Arinze, who is currently being held at Salemba Penitentiary in Central Jakarta in a narcotic case still under judicial process, was ordered by a man named John (still at large) to pick up narcotic drug from China and bring it to Indonesia.

He then asked Tuti and Rojali, (earlier informed by David, at large) to carry out the job.

The drug, weighing 6.3 kilograms, was smuggled in a thermos flask through a Covenant Logistic expedition in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, and then kept in a kiosk in Cibinong, Bogor, West Java.

The state prosecutor has charged all the suspects with violation of Law Number 35 of 2009 on narcotics because they attempted to commit an evil act of smuggling a narcotic substance by becoming facilitators in the distribution of drugs and therefore deserved a death penalty.

Batam hospital calls on family of Briton to collect his body

The Batam Authority ( BPK ) Hospital has urged the family of UK citizen Scott Roddie, 52, to pick up his body, which has been held in the morgue of the hospital for more than three months.

The hospital’s management is worried about the condition of the body if it is kept too long in the morgue.

The Awal Bros Hospital, Batam, sent the body of the British man, who died of natural causes, to the BPK Hospital on Feb.10.

Head of the BPK Hospital’s morgue Rian Narulita told thejakartapost.com that it was the Batam, Rempang and Galang ( Barelang ) Police’s intelligence division and the Awal Bros Hospital that had entrusted Roddie’s body to her hospital.

“We keep calling on the police and Interpol to provide certainty [on when the body will be picked up] because it has been here too long,” said Rian.

She further said that based on standard operating procedures, a dead body could be kept in cold storage for three months at maximum. The storage can last longer, up to six months, if the cold storage facility’s door is kept closed. However, the cold-storage facility in which Roddie’s body is being kept has been opened several times so there is no guarantee that its condition will not deteriorate within the next three months.

“We don’t know what the problem is, neither his family nor the UK Embassy in Jakarta have yet picked up the body. We are really worried about the condition of the body,” said Rian.

She further explained that the cost of storing Roddie’s body amounted to Rp 20 million ( around US$ 1,500 ).

“We want the body to be immediately picked up because BPK Hospital has only eight corpse cold-storage facilities. It is the only hospital in Riau Islands that has a corpse cold-storage facility,” said Rian.

BPK Hospital spokesperson Wawan Setiawan said Roddie died when he was undergoing medical treatment at Awal Bros Hospital. The hospital later sent the body of the expatriate, who worked for a shipyard company in Batam, to the BPK Hospital as his family members had yet to pick it up.

“We treated it differently because he’s a foreigner. According to our existing procedures, we bury a body if no family member picks it up within a month. But this is for Indonesians. The problem is, the UK Embassy has not yet given any helpful information for us to decide [what to do with the body],” said Wawan.

A source who wished to remain anonymous said the police were facing difficulties in tracing the whereabouts of Roddie’s family in the UK. It was reported that the deceased was estranged from his family. Meanwhile, the UK Embassy has provided little assistance to the Indonesian authorities in resolving the problem.
