Yes, it was my friends Vietnamese wife parents private land in Cam mountain. It's a very big piece of slopy land. The land was uncultivated because they were poor, and the land is slopy because it's a mountain.

Now the parents have divided the land and gift it to their 3 children. It is still very big individually.

You are very right, they also worry the durian plants may disappear mysteriously too.

Last year when I was staying in HaTien casino resort at the seaside border between Cambodia and Vietnam, I observe that the locals would just ride their motorcycles in and out of the immigration checkpoint without stopping.

Definitely it's super easy to cross borders through the countryside.

Vietnamese people are also very brave and tough and they are not very worried about short prison terms. They dare to overstay in a foreign country.

I was offered a ride to go over from Ha Tien to Cambodia border without passport on a bike for 100k dong back in 2015...I wasn't keen to go...

ex-Police officers were all very rich in Vn...so your friends-wife-father no difference...they are the biggest ah long and most corrupt persons in Vn...

knew of some current and ex-police officers who were very rich...their riches depends where they work...definitely TPHCM officers will be richest...

so now you knew they are biggest liars...

imagine every hotels need to bribe...and count how many hotels...also many entertainment outlets...also big shot police wife birthday or kids marriage, many have to pay for the expenses...

In sihanoukville, I rent a bike and then ride to kampot and then to kep province to eat crabs and then spent a night in kep, a quiet town at night. The next day I rode to ha tien border and stayed at Ha Tien casino resort.

From my room I have a very good view of how the locals zoom in and out of the immigration checkpoints without stamping their passports.

It's tempting but I dare not ride my bike through the checkpoints. So I walk to both immigrations to get my passport stamped and then on Vietnam side, I took a bus to the port in ha tien and spent 2 nights here...... There are freelancers here too, the trishaw riders showed me photographs of these freelancers.

The world is so cynical! Leave the old man alone. One day you will be the tomfoolery and he will have the last laugh. $1,700 is small change for him. The moment he made the small investment, he has decided to lose it all. It is not maths, it is not about exploitation, it is only making a simple observation of these people who are asset rich and cash poor, providing a solution of turning virgin land into a gold mine. We can’t make a mountain out of a molehill but in this case I bet my last dollar, although he can’t laugh to the bank, he will get to eat lulian every now and then

$1700 is a very small sum and it's really worth the risk because if it turn out bad, we lost only peanuts but if it turn out that they honour the verbal agreements of profit sharing, the return will be immense.

Of course nobody is stupid including d Vietnamese. We weigh the pro and cons........And for a small sum, there's nothing much to consider either. So in our case, because my friends wife is a local Vietnamese, it's not easy for the local Vietnamese to dishonour their words too. Therefore, just at $1700, it is a damn good investment.

In my recent trip to my friends wife home in CAM mountain, everyday we eat durians and they are good durians not like those Thai durians. The durians were those bitter type, very nice. In 3 years time, their land will be full of durians.

Personally, my China girl friend in wuhan have a cousin who wish to sell his land at just only 10,000 rmb, so do I need to consider, obViously not. Her cousin wanted to sell away the land because he prefer city life and is now staying in shenzhen. In Oct or Dec, I will fly to Wuhan.

For countryside people, usually they have their own ways to mark their boundaries such as using trees, rocks etc.... They don't put fencing.

A normal durian tree, I.e. plant from the seeds, will take at least 8yrs before it bear fruits.
However a grafted branch will take less yrs before it bear fruits.

That guy’s horticulture info is obsolete. I have seen grafted durian fruit within the first year but there are trees that took over 20 years to fruit from seed propagation.

Vietnamese are pretty advanced in farming; for example they put ‘spot lights’ in dragon fruit plantation at night to double the yield. Some are also the victims of their own success like last year there was huge bumper crop of lychee, the quantity so much, the price became lau-sai.

But we city slickers what we know about durians except pay through the nose to enjoy the satiety of the illusive varietal. Better stick to chasing skirts as our subject matter expertise
