Daniel: I’ll meet you at the usual coffeeshop, tell you when you get there bro.

I got to the coffeeshop somewhere in the West, near to where William lived. Ordered my drink and lighted up a cigarette, waiting for him to come. My mind drifted off to what I saw earlier in the evening.

I was alone in chinatown having my claypot porridge, my fiancée was off on her ladies’ night, after which I decided to take a stroll around the place, partly looking to see what change throughout the years, partly to help with the digestion. Without a route in mind, I just wandered wherever that caught my fancy. After aimlessly walking around, I found myself along the alleys and pathways of Chinatown, stopping at an intersection along Temple street. I was about to light up a stick when I saw a familiar hourglass figure standing outside one of the many hotels that called Chinatown home.

“Can’t believe that those two are still checking into this places after being together for that long” I thought to myself. I was about to call out to Yvonne when I saw a man approaching her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulled her in for a kiss, a man that looked nothing like my buddy,William. They both turn and walked up the stairs, no doubt checking into the hotel for some adult fun.

I manage to catch myself before I called out to her. I turn to the sound of the voice just as William was sitting down,

William: So you were saying????

He had a weird look on his face now as he tried to remember her relatives and cousins, I paid for the drink when the lady return.

I took a deep breath… “this will not end well” I thought as I tried to formulate the words I was about to speak out.

Daniel: I could be wrong bro but…. I think I saw Yvonne entering a hotel with another guy in Chinatown.

I snap out of my thinking and turn to face him, William looked around, holding on to his phone as he seems to be checking out if the people surrounding us was paying attention to us. He turn to face me,

William: Come, I saw you something but not here. Where did you park?

I pointed in the general direction.

William: Let’s go, I parked there as well. (as he drain his green tea)

We both got up and left the noise of the coffeeshop behind us, the short walk to our cars felt like an eternality, we were both quiet, nothing like our usual selves.

We got to his car first, William looked around again, spotting some couples walking by on their way to the coffeeshop.

William: Let’s head over to my place, here too many people.

Daniel: Ok….

I got to my car and follow William’s car out of the carpark and stayed behind him all the way to his condo, a short drive away.

Within minutes, we were in the basement carpark of his condo, we headed down to B2 and parked side by side, we both came out and stood by the cars. He handed me his phone, as I was grab it, I could see that it was video that he wanted me to see. William was still holding on to the phone,

William: I’m going to show you something… but promise that you won’t freak out ok?

Daniel: Why will I freak out from a video?

William: Just promise alright?

I nodded as he release the phone.

William: And no judgement please.

The way he said the last line, I felt that it carried a lot of weight and seriousness from the tone of his voice.

William: just stay cool alright bro?

I took his phone in my hands and hit play.

The video started playing, on screen was a guy having sex with a woman in doggy position on the bed. All I could see was the side profile of both person. The couple on screen was still going at it in doggy style, I took a break from the viewing as I looked at William, he was now smoking, totally ignoring me as he seem to be lost in his own thoughts. I return my eyes to the video playing.

I finally manage to stump out some words into a sentence.

William: What do you mean?

After having dinner with my parents and sending her home. I return to my place, grab a bottle, glass and an ice bucket. I headed up to the open air space and settle on one of the wooden beach chairs that Debbie wanted for suntanning. I pour myself a drink and light up a stick, nursing my drink and taking puffs from my cigarette, I realise something that this is what William and Yvonne wanted, nothing to do with me. If this makes them happy and since they found like-minded couples and no one is getting hurt then I don’t see why not. It’s not like this has turn them into strangers, they were still the same couple that Debbie and I knew. If I keep my mouth shut, I don’t see why things can’t be the same.
