BLOGGER ALEX AU FINED $8,000 FOR CONTEMPT OF COURT

Post date:
5 Mar 2015 - 2:16pm

Prominent Blogger Alex Au from Yawning Bread has been fined $8,000 for contempt of court over a blog post dated October 5 2013.
The blog post was deemed to have "scandalized" the judiciary and cast into doubt the integrity and fairness of the court system.
In the post, Blogger Au had had implied that the courts were deliberately changing hearing dates for a constitutional challenge against Section 377A of the Penal code, a law which criminalizes gay sex.
His post suggested that the court dates were changed so that a specific judge could preside over the case.
Au, 62, apologized to the court nad paid the fine but it is reported that he had also instructed his lawyers to file an appeal.

Originally, he was facing contempt of court charges for two blog posts but the High Court had earlier ruled that the other article was not contempt of court.
In the other article, Au said that his confidence in the judiciary was as limp as a flag on a windless day. The courts had ruled that this statement was not contempt of court as it was expressing an opinion.
He was found guilty of contempt of court in January for just 1 blog post.
